  • Slow, improvement is plan for ML girls' tennis

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 13, 2017

The Medical Lake girls’ tennis team is trying to take flight, but so far the runway has been almost too slippery. “I think I counted and we’ve had 11 days where we were on the tennis court, and I think four of those were with shovels, and two of those were matches,” co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said. A month into the season, the team has had just five real practices, and not even that many matches. Coming off a 0-16 season, there is nowhere to go but up, and everyone seems to b...

  • Cardinal boys' work to defend Northeast A League tennis title

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 13, 2017

As has been the case with their counterparts on the girls’ side, it’s been a challenge to even get on the court in the first place for Medical Lake’s boys’ tennis co-head coach Jake Wesselman. As of last week the team had just nine practices outside, and played only three matches, giving their coach little on which to go in painting a true picture of his squad. “It’s not ideal, but we’re not the only ones in that boat,” he said, referencing the fact that not one Northeast A...

At one point, Rolan had the 16th fastest time of the day out of 38 entrants. Rolan also raced in her other spring specialty, the 200-meters where she clocked a 25.07...

  • Still more to do at Eastern for women's coach Wendy Schuller

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 13, 2017

Six seasons of slow steady progress building his basketball program at Eastern Washington University helped get Jim Hayford a new gig at Seattle University last month. While there are no guarantees, after 16 seasons as head coach of the Eagle women, Wendy Schuller seems content to continue building her program at Eastern. After all, what would the city of Cheney do without her husband Mark, the man of many hats at City Hall? Ever since an injury-riddled season in 2007-08 that...

Cheney’s boys soccer team snapped a brief, two-game skid with a 4-1 road win last week at Clarkston. The Blackhawks got first half goals from Graham West and Kelby Holland, with Holland’s in the 29th minute proving to be the eventual game winner in the April 4 match up. Cheney added extra margin with goals in the second half by Noah Prophet and Hunter Plummer. West, Sam Fix and Noah Schorzman provided assists.
