    Updated Apr 4, 2014

For a second year in a row the Eastern Washington University football team begins preparations for their upcoming season with a chip on its collective shoulder. Spring practice begins Friday, April 4 with the memory of Towson University’s 35-31 Football Championship Subdivision victory last Dec. 21 at Roos Field. The visiting Tigers rallied in the final 5 minutes, 9 seconds and erased a 10-point EWU lead sending the Towson onto the national championship game in Frisco, Texas. Two years ago EWU’s furious rally fell short in...

  • Cardinal defense saves the day at Kettle Falls

    Updated Apr 4, 2014

Medical Lake’s defense came to the rescue in the end. But only after a lack of it helped dig the Cardinals into a hole in the first place last Wednesday in a Northeast A League baseball game at Kettle Falls. The Cardinals (3-1 NEA, 4-1 overall) rallied from deficits or 3-0 and 5-1 to beat the Bulldogs 7-6, earning a split in their week’s games following a 4-2 loss at Freeman (2-0, 2-0), last Tuesday. In the top of the eighth Cory Wagner walked to open the inning then stole second. Tristen Keith bunted Wagner over to thi...

Jordyn Soliday, also a senior, joins the team from Liberty High. Cheevers is in centerfield and is in her third year with the team....

  • New approach for Medical Lake tennis in 2014

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2014

There has been relatively little change over the years when it has come to coaching Medical Lake tennis. It was first under the careful guidance of Leroy Lemaster for decades, and most recently the girls have had Dawn Eliassen leading that team since 1999. Now, the most recent changes in coaching roles still have the program in familiar hands. Following the move of boys' coach Justin Blayne into an athletic administrator's role, the teams are now co-coached by Eliassen and...

    Al Stover, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2014

The Cheney boys' golf team has been busy on the links, as they get ready for the remainder of the season. Bob Hilzendeger, who is in his second year as head coach, said the season is "going well." After losing seniors Nick Hilzendeger and Tyler Maurer to graduation, several players have been practicing in hopes of moving up the ranks. "They're a pretty young and inexperienced team so far," Hilzendeger said. "But, I'm seeing players coming around and improving quickly." One...

  • Tournament's return might not require help, but assistance could be there

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2014

The rumor mill was running in overdrive following the recently concluded West Regional for the 2014 NCAA men's basketball tournament held at the Spokane Arena, March 20-22. Out of one end of the machine came word that Washington State University, the sponsoring collegiate institution, would not renew its involvement, and thus, our area's place -specifically Spokane - in the national spotlight would go away. Days after the Arena was returned to its usual spring tenants,...

  • ML weathers the weather in Colville

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2014

Weathering the weather proved to be the toughest battle at last Saturday's Ezra Gordon Invitational track meet last Saturday in Colville. The meet, which attracted 23 girls teams, plus another 22 on the boy's side, including Medical Lake, saw lightning twice delay the event and finally lead to early cancellation of distance events. But despite the early end, the beginning and middle had notable accomplishments according the Cardinals' co-coach Gene Blankenship. "We had a...
