  • Fire precautions must be taken this season

We're rounding into our third official week of spring next week, which is somewhat startling, seeing how this winter was so spring-like all the way through. Thanks in large part to El Nino, a dry December transitioned into one of the top ten warmest Januarys since records began, and it's been well over a month since the last recorded snowfall in the area. This pleasanter-than-average weather brings with it an easy transition from the indoor doldrums to a downpour of outdoor community events, activities and sports. Unlike...

  • Letters to the editor

Cheney city, school district might want to consider a swap Are we the only ones who find it sadly ironic that the Cheney School District will soon tear down a 31-year-old middle school building while the Cheney City Council is moving forward with spending approximately $550,000 in insurance money to rebuild/restore (to a degree) the Wren Pierson Building? We find ourselves grieving the impending loss of the existing middle school because it is a perfectly good building. In our wishful thinking, we wonder whether the city and...

  • Time to stop all this end times stuff and look to future

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Read or watch enough apocalyptic stuff and pretty soon you're seeing signs of the end of the world everywhere you look. Threat of economic collapse, endless wars, natural disasters, dogs and cats living together in sin, man, Judgment Day must be right around the corner. Some people think it is and they've got a date – 2012. Specifically Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at least according to experts popping up on TV shows, movies and in books citing everyone and everything from the Mayans to Nostradamus, the B...

Cheney Middle School...

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Emergencies can happen at any time, in any place. Mutual protection stalling final contract between Spokane County, new operators By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Spokane County and the new operators of the Airway Heights racetrack are taking the tortoise approach rather than that of the hare. • Looking Back

1 Years Ago March 30, 2000 Eastern Washington University is changing its master plan to reflect more of a residential campus look and be less of a commuter school. The university penned the original master plan in 1993 and changes will set the agenda for any future construction on campus. The intersection of College Avenue and First Street is more than just the place where two roadways come together. Turns out the 45 degree angle the intersection forms served a dual purpose in the 1920s as a directional arrow for airplanes...
