  • EWU football spring practice begins April 4

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Mar 29, 2013

There may be some new faces in a few spots, but the Eastern Washington University football team has plenty of experience to help make the spring seem more like a re-loading than a re-building. The Eagles will begin preparations for the 2013 season when EWU opens spring practices April 4. The Eagles will spread out their allotted 15 practices over the course of five weeks, instead of cramming them into four like last year. For the most part, Eastern will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays, and have scrimmages Saturdays. The annua...

  • Blackhawks deliver 'complete game' win over E. Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 29, 2013

The Cheney boys’ soccer team put together perhaps their most complete performance to date in this young Great Northern League season last Thursday, blanking projected league champion East Valley 3-0 at home. “I was pretty surprised by everything we did and what East Valley didn’t do,” Blackhawks’ head coach Mark Kiver said. The Knights played the first half without their main weapon, last year’s GNL scoring leader Adam Talley. The senior forward did play in the second half...

  • Soils versus sea beds

    Dr E KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Mar 29, 2013

There’s a new debate in paleontology, one that took me by surprise but that shows nicely how some science works. There’s a particular type of ancient fossil called the “Ediacara fauna” found in rocks about 550 million years old. The term Ediacara is reference to a place in Australia where the fossils were located and well-described. In a complex tale that unfolded over decades both before and a bit after the Australian discovery, similar fossils were found around the world at several locations. In time people connected the se...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 28, 2013

A variance to the city’s nuisance ordinance came forward at the monthly study session for the Airway Heights City Council Monday, March 26. The Washington state Department of Transportation applied for the variance, in advance of its upcoming work on Highway 2 later this year. Public Works Director Kelly Williquette said most of the work would be done at night, and would affect some of the city’s noise ordinances, in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Adjusting the ordinance would allow the work to take place during night hours. W...

  • Studded tire deadline approaches as spring arrives

    Updated Mar 28, 2013

OLYMPIA – Spring has arrived – maybe. All the same,as temperatures rise across the region, the Washington State Department of Transportation reminds drivers to remove their studded tires by midnight, March 31. Studded tires are legal in Washington from Nov. 1 to March 31, unless WSDOT grants an extension. Multiple forecasts indicate temperatures will be well above 50 degrees in many parts of the state and WSDOT is not planning on extending the deadline. This year, Oregon and Washington are coordinating studded-tire removal da...

  • Obama makes us heroes

    Marc Dion, Columnist|Updated Mar 28, 2013

If some of your friends are political cranks, then you know the argument. Goes like this: Your town spends, say, $600 providing a “get your picture taken with Santa” event for the local kids. Hopefully, they do it at Christmas “Great,” your crank buddy says. “The whole freakin’ city is fallin’ apart, and Mayor McCheese is playin’ with Santa. That $600 could be spent helping to get drugs out of the city.” The idea is that ANY money spent on ANYTHING other than simple education, minimal road repair and cops, lots of cops, is...

  • Life turned upside down in burglary

    Phil Kiver|Updated Mar 28, 2013

Last week my wife’s van had the door window smashed out at Fish Lake trailhead. To the persons responsible here’s the damage you caused: My five-year-old daughter is now concerned about bad guys, so you stole her innocence. This is what is most upsetting to me; my daughter didn’t make it to be six years old without being the victim of a crime. You broke the tinted window, which was the most expensive one on the vehicle. With no idea of what you would find inside, that just makes you a complete vandal to begin with. Our daught...

  • Holidays offer a time for a fresh start

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 28, 2013

This is an interesting week as it marks the juxtaposition of two religious observances important to two different faiths, yet very intertwined. Tuesday, March 26, marked the beginning of Passover for members of the Jewish community, an important holiday, if you can call it a holiday that runs through April 2. The same goes with the other holiday, Easter, which for many Christians begins today with Maundy Thursday and culminates Sunday with Easter. I raise the issue of calling these observances holidays because, unlike other...

  • More health care options might reduce money's impact

    Updated Mar 28, 2013

It’s time for the state to look elsewhere for better health care coverage, and that can be done easily by allowing health care options to be purchased outside of Washington. Opening up health care across Washington’s state line will allow for greater opportunities for other companies to come in and compete with the established health insurance companies. Unfortunately, it appears that the state Legislature isn’t even close to considering that type of change. Although politicians may say otherwise, part of the reason for not c...

  • Parents ask district to question Darwin's theory

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 28, 2013

Medical Lake resident Mark Hudson asked the Medical Lake School District board of directors to consider adding curriculum that would introduce scientific questioning of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. At the Tuesday, March 26 board meeting, Hudson wasn’t alone, however, and brought along a petition signed by 299 others in Medical Lake who hoped the item would be added to the district’s curriculum. Some, he pointed out, thought the theory of evolution was correct, but wanted children to have the opportunity to quest...

  • Eastern expands lot to provide more student and game-day parking

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 28, 2013

In a city where parking is a perennial sore spot, officials at Eastern Washington University are taking steps to hopefully alleviate that – at least when it comes to students and football game days. The university has received a mitigated determination of non-significance (MDNS) from the city of Cheney for construction of a new, 550-stall parking lot just off of Washington Street and north of Roos Field. The lot is essentially an extension of the existing P-12 lot that serves...

  • ML's recycling center's future is up for debate

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 28, 2013

The future of the city’s recycling center received a lengthy discussion at the last Medical Lake City Council meeting, stemming from a decision to change the facility’s pick-up service. At the Tuesday, March 19 meeting, the city reiterated it had changed from Recycle America to Sunshine Disposal to pick up recyclable material dropped off at the center. Recycle America transported items to Waste Management’s new recycling center, which opened toward the end of last year. The change stemmed from a heavy price increase imple...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 28, 2013

Approving a contract for pruning and removing trees along the city’s electrical distribution system was the only action item on the Cheney City Council’s short agenda Tuesday night. Light Department Director Joe Noland told the council that eight bid packages had been prepared and sent out to qualified contractors, and only two responded with proposals, with the low bid submitted by Davey’s Tree Service of Kennewick. Davey’s bid $4,770 a week, $5,184.99 with tax added. Noland said the amount was about $500 more per week th...

The city of Spokane hosted the first of two workshops to gain public input on developing a united regional transportation plan. Participants included the city of Spokane, Spokane County and Airway Heights. Bill Grimes, principal with Studio Cascade, Inc., said the plan will factor in plans for the typical major highways as well as non-motorized transportation methods for groups like...
