  • Taming the Wildcats

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

Medical Lake's Brayden Hale delivers a pitch in last Thrusday's 10-0 nonleague shutout victory over the Kellogg Wildcats. Hale pitched a two-hit complete game in his first start of the young season that helped the Cardinals even their record at 1-1. Hale also had a pair of hits in the game, including a double. After having their Northeast A League opening game against Newport rained out this past Tuesday, the Cardinals are on the road Saturday for a doubleheader at Colville...

  • Medical Lake makes walks work in win

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

It's certainly early, just one game into the season, but Medical Lake softball coach Tim Blakely got some reassurances in last Thursday's 11-1 nonleague victory over Kellogg, Idaho. Going into the season he had concerns about pitching after losing his two aces to graduation. Chelsea Hamby helped quell those fears by allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. "We had a great performance from Chelsea Hamby," Blakely said. But more important, even though they...

  • Medical Lake looks strong again in 1A track

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

Medical Lake co-head track coach Gene Blankenship was quick to say this time there would be none of the boastful predictions for his defending state 1A track team that got him in a little hot water last fall in advance of the cross country season. Nope, there’ll be none of that, Blankenship said. “No rash predictions.” Last August while looking ahead to early November in Pasco at the state cross country meet, Blankenship said his Cardinals would successfully defend their...

  • Cheney boy's tennis tops Shadle Park, ML

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

The Cheney High boys tennis team continued to breeze through the early part of the season after they won 5-2 matches against Shadle Park, March 18 and Medical Lake, March 19. Ryan Smedley continued his winning streak at No. 1 singles, with a close victory over Ian Stein (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) followed by an impressive win over Noah Ray (6-0, 6-2). “Smedley struggled in that second game in the Shadle Park match but he was able to come back and was on cruise control from there,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. Ryan Axtell won both of...

  • Cheney girls' tennis picks up wins over Shadle Park, Medical Lake

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

The Cheney High girls tennis team is blazing through the beginning of its season. They went 2-1 at the March 13 jamboree with wins over Othello, 4-3, and Moses Lake, 4-3, and a loss to Ellensburg, 2-5. On March 18, the Blackhawks defeated Shadle Park, 4-3, then picked up a 6-1 win over Medical Lake the next day. “We were relying on our doubles to come out on top,” head coach Jason Overland said regarding the Shadle Park match. “It was the first time in a while, that all three doubles won. It was a team effort.” At No. 1 s...

  • Blackhawk girls open against GSL's Lewis and Clark

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 26, 2015

The Cheney High girls’ track and field team kicked off their 2015 season with a pair of meets last week. The Blackhawks held their own against a larger Lewis and Clark 4A team from the Greater Spokane League last Wednesday, March 18; winning nine of the 18 events in the 81.67 – 68.33 loss to the visiting Tigers. Cheney capped the week with an eighth-place finish Saturday at the Howard Dolphin West Valley Invitational at West Valley High School. Abby Hammermeister, Hannah Spakousky and KD Skillingstad led the Blackhawks on...

  • Lady Blackhawks tee off on Prosser pitching

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 26, 2015

On the surface, Cheney High School’s 25-3 thumping of the Prosser Mustangs in softball action last Wednesday may seem to indicate potential signs of greatness. Lady Blackhawks head coach Gary Blake is a bit more cautious in his assessment. Cheney hit the ball well for sure, but Blake noted that the Mustangs’ pitching isn’t as strong as it has been in the past. “Certainly they (Cheney) will see some better pitching,” Blake said of the fast approaching Great Northern League schedule. The Lady Blackhawks got all the scoring t...

  • Cheney girls golf takes third in first GNL match

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

The Cheney High girls golf team hit the ground running after they finished third out of five teams and scoring 108 points, March 16 at the first Great Northern League match of the season. The team not only enters a new league landscape with two less teams but also a new scoring system. Before the season, the GNL voted to go with a modified Stableford scoring system, where the highest total of points wins instead of the lowest. Each golfer is awarded the following scores: six for an eagle, five for a birdie, four for par,...

  • Cheney opens GNL play with wins over East Valley, Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 26, 2015

Road wins are huge in any league, and that's especially true with the Great Northern League's boys' soccer schedule where teams play each other three times - none of which come on neutral sites. So while last Saturday's 2-1 Cheney win at 2014 league runner-up Pullman might not be big now, later on in the season it could loom large for both squads. Right now, for Blackhawks head coach Mark Kiver, it's a "nice way to start off the season." After a scoreless first 40 minutes it...

  • Borland is allowed to make his own decisions about his career

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

While college hoops and tournaments have been on everyone’s minds for the last couple of weeks, linebacker Chris Borland made headlines after he announced his retirement from professional football on “Outside the Lines,” after just one year with the San Francisco 49ers. His reasoning for leaving the sport of football revolves around his concerns with head trauma. Borland, who came into the NFL after a successful career at the University of Wisconsin, played 14 games, had 84 solo tackles, two interceptions and one sack and b...

  • Cheney boy's track and field success is a matter of time

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 26, 2015

Patience. It's the key word when it comes to the 2015 Cheney High School boys' track and field team. For second-year head coach Bobby Byrd, patience is what's needed for a team that is stronger than last year's squad, contains a mixture of experience and youth but is still overall pretty young with the potential for growth, particularly later on in the season. Eleven seniors and four juniors lead the Blackhawks contingent of 43 athletes this spring, the rest a roughly equal...

  • Huge Hoyas halt Eastern's postseason, 84-74

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

In Eastern Washington's first return trip to the NCAA Tournament, they ran out of that prescription of rally pills. Or, perhaps, in last Thursday's opening round 84-74 loss to the No. 4 seeded and 22nd ranked giant Georgetown Hoyas, the 13th-seeded Eagles needed a stronger version in front of 14,279 at Portland's Moda Center. To get to their first NCAA appearance since 2004, the Eagles had a number of big-time come-from-behind victories along the way, most recently, their Big...

  • Sac State storms past EWU women in WNIT game

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

The Eastern Washington women’s basketball team’s longest postseason run came to a definite halt March 23 at the Hornet’s Nest in Sacramento, Calif. After cold starts in both halves the Eagles were hammered 84-49 by their Big Sky Conference rivals in a round-two game in the Women’s NIT. Eastern advanced to the round following a 67-65 victory over Washington State March 18 in Pullman. “We did not handle their pressure,” EWU head coach Wendy Schuller said. “We knew what to expec...

  • Blackhawks pick up wins over ML, Freeman

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 26, 2015

The Cheney high baseball team had another strong week, picking up a 6-3 win over Medical Lake, March 18 and a 5-2 win over Freeman, March 20. In the game against Medical Lake, Harrison King put the Blackhawks on the scoreboard in the first inning after hitting a single to bring in Chance Gleave. In the second inning, catcher Dominic Bonilla hit a single to bring in Riley Jones, then scored after stealing home. After Medical Lake scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Bonill...
