  • Eastern women fall in Big Sky tournament semis to PSU

Vikes get hot with 3-pointers, Eagles go cold at line in loss By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Eastern Washington University's women's basketball team got part of the job done but couldn't finish their task at last week's Big Sky Conference basketball tournament played at the Stott Center in Portland. The No. 6 seeded Eagles opened the tournament last Thursday with a 77-68 victory over No. 3 Montana State, ending a three-game losing streak at the hands of Bobcats. That earned Eastern a shot at No. 1 seed Portland State who used...

  • In Our Opinion: We've been here before, when will we learn?

By now it's a familiar story: Turmoil in the Middle East leads to a rapid rise in U.S. oil prices, hurting consumers at the pump and causing an economic shock that's hard to shake. At the tail end of 1973 and into 1974 the economy was stunned by rising prices triggered by OPEC's (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) embargo to protest U.S. support of Israel in the Arab-Israeli War. In 1979 another oil crisis occurred in the wake of the Iranian Revolution, when protests plugged Iranian oil exports. The so-called...

A fourth successful water well installed by local West Plains church team By LUELLA DOW Contributor In several previous columns of “Cabbages and Kings” I have had an opportunity to share with you the three previous trips taken by members of Cheney Community Church as they have travelled to Nicaragua with well drilling teams supervised by Living Water International, of Houston Texas, to install water wells in poor communities that have no reliable nearby safe source of drinking water. Recently Cheney Community Church sent out...

  • Cheney woman back from year in Afghanistan

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Hospital Corpsman First Class Cherrie Davis-Dietrich has served in the military as a reservist for more than 20 years. She said that serving part-time has been good, steady work for her, and allowed her to advance her education while she worked her civilian job as a Teamster in highway construction. Davis-Dietrich, a native of Spokane Valley who moved to Cheney after marrying her husband Tom Davis, began as a reservist with the Air Force before “bouncing branches,” she said, moving to the Nav...

  • Martin Hall juvenile offenders learn while locked up

Detention Center provides a variety of classes, programs By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter A small sign hangs in Debbie Hinthorne's language arts classroom bearing the phrase, “What you have been is not as important as what you can be.” The axiom might be found in any school, but it rings especially true for Hinthorne's students. Some of these kids, who range in age from 11 to 17, have broken into houses or stolen cars; others might be gang members or have committed crimes that will leave them behind bars for most of their liv...

  • A reminder of heroism

Small piece of World Trade Center steel brings Sept. 11 tragedy home to Cheney By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter It's an unassuming piece of steel, maybe a foot wide and three feet tall. You wouldn't know just by looking at it. “Sitting here in the office, you look at it and think, eh, it's just a piece of metal,” Cheney Fire Chief Mike Winters said. “But it was part of a building that supposedly was never going to come down. You think about the images of the planes going into those towers, and people going down and the firefigh...

  • Cheney Parks Hoopsters take first place

Editor's note: We inadvertently ran the information for the Cheney Parks and Recreation Special Olympic team with a picture of the Cheney High School team in last week's issue. This is the correct information. Both of Cheney's Special Olympics basketball teams took part in state tournament competition March 4-6 in Wenatchee, with the city Parks and Recreation squad the Hoopsters taking first place in their division, Master's 6, and receiving a gold medal. The Hoopsters (left) won all three of their games, including a 30-28...

  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago March 22, 2001 If a debate over Cheney's proposed manufactured housing ordinance was any indicator, the final road to implementing the new code figured to be long and bumpy. The Cheney City Council moved the ordinance further towards implementation but expected to make further changes to it. Airway Heights lost one member of its Planning Commission when long-time member Mark Smith stepped down after six years on the job, including four as chairman. He cited the need to tend to other commitments and not being... Full story

  • Martin Hall staff are a testament to power of positivity

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Last week I had the chance visit Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Center in Medical Lake, where boys and girls who've been accused of a felony stay for a few days up to a couple of weeks while they wait for a hearing. The place is similar to other jails I've toured – blank hallways, limited daylight, a lot of locks – but for one striking detail: Everyone who works there seems exceptionally cheerful. This isn't to say the fine folks at Airway Heights Corrections Center or the Pine Lodge Cor... Full story

  • Medical Lake council continues jail fight

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter On Tuesday Medical Lake City Council said it will continue to fight the placement of a new Spokane County jail just east of the city and authorized a letter of opposition to be read into the record at a county planning commission public hearing March 17. City attorney Cindy McMullen drafted the letter, which outlines a number of issues the city sees with an emergency comprehensive plan amendment, an urban growth area amendment and a land rezone the county has undertaken to clear the way for th...

  • Blackhawks retool for shot at third straight league baseball crown

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Blackhawks' manager Randy Elam is like a kid on Christmas morning when it comes to his 2011 Cheney High School baseball team. The fifth-year Cheney manager is excited, something one might consider odd since the Blackhawks graduated 12 seniors from last year's 18-4 squad that won its second straight Great Northern League title and advanced to the state quarterfinals before losing to Selah. But maybe that's just the point. “As a coach, I feel like I'm getting a brand new team,” Elam said. Three var... Full story

Raul ready to rock again with Shock Former Eastern receiver Vijil takes fast-track on knee rehab By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter A year ago at this time the question facing former Eastern Washington University wide receiver Raul Vijil was whether he had the ability to take his game to a new level. His team since the spring of 2006, the Spokane Shock, had decided to take their own leap of faith that they could compete in the reconstituted Arena Football League. Vijil, the team's all-time leader in over a half-dozen offensive... Full story

  • ‘Bring your A-game,' Eastern hockey coach Braun tells opponents at Nationals

Eagles in search of ACHA national championship this week in San Jose By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter If the opponents the Eastern Washington University's men's hockey team faces in this week's American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II championships in San Jose, Calif. need a scouting report, it's pretty simple. “Make sure you bring you A-game because we're coming after you,” head coach Gary Braun said Monday from the team hotel in California. As he's said before, there is no game planning or scouting the opp...

  • Internal competition could help lead Cheney girls' tennis team to success this season

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor If members of the Cheney High School girls' tennis team's starting lineup hear footsteps behind them, chances are it's their teammates giving them a run for their money, or at least their spots. Second-year Blackhawks head coach Corey Anderson said the competition should be pretty fierce on the team “ladder,” with 12-13 players capable of jumping into any of the four singles and six doubles varsity spots. With a team that includes four returning varsity players, three helping Cheney finish fifth at...
