    The Cheney City Council approved a land sale at its March 11 meeting that will bring the first marijuana facility to the city. In a 5-1 vote — Councilwoman Jill Weiszmann voted no with Councilman Bob Stockton absent — the council authorized Mayor Tom Trulove to sign and accept a sale of two parcels, with an option on a third, to Bill Youngs and partners for the construction of a marijuana production and processing facility in the city’s Commerce and Industrial Park.     Medical Lake students and staff have a new way to access books and reading materials as the school libraries are now offering ebooks and audiobooks through their Overdrive system at no charge. Students and staff can log into the system using their school ID and download materials to their smart phone, tablet computer, ereader or their computer.   • Hallett Elementary School meets goal for annual book fair

    Hallett Elementary School once again held their annual book fair, sponsored by Scholastic Books, March 3-7. Diana Jones, the head library tech for Hallett said the fair helps the school purchase more books for the library's shelves. Jones added that the book fair also gives Hallett students a chance to look at titles and materials they would not normally have access to because they live in a remote community.     At a special meeting March 5, Eastern Washington University’s board of trustees approved the hiring of a consultant firm to help search for a new president. The board accepted a bid from EFL Associates to help in the hunt for a replacement for Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo, who is retiring July 15.     The Washington State Patrol is conducting a homicide investigation into a Feb. 21 car-semi-truck collision outside Colfax that resulted in the deaths of two Eastern Washington University students.   • Volunteers needed for seventh annual Cheney Clean Sweep coming April 26

    The city of Cheney is looking for volunteers to assist with this year’s Cheney Clean Sweep. The seventh annual day to collect litter and clean up public spaces takes place Saturday, April 26 beginning at 9 a.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Park. Volunteers are needed.     Ruth Joan Amos of Azalea, Ore., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, of natural causes at Riverview Terrace in Roseburg. A memorial service will be planned later. Ruth and her husband were avid horticulturists who owned and managed the Azalea Gardens for 20 years. They were members of the Rhododendron Club and truly loved their flowers.
