  • First Blackhawk Dessert Auction a success for Cheney athletics

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Mar 13, 2014

Every now and then everybody needs some kudos. Actually, we should be doing more now to positively acknowledge the work of individuals and organizations than waiting until then. Last Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the first and hopefully annual, Blackhawk Dessert Auction at Cheney High School. For a first time event, it was fairly well attended, with around 100 or so milling about the high school entry way, examining auction tables and placing bids on a variety of items ranging from toys to athletic gear and...

The Eastern win at Weber earned the Eagles not only a No. 4 seed in the conference tournament that takes place in Grand Forks, N.D., but also a quick rematch against Idaho State (11-9 Big Sky, 13-16 overall). • Ron Cox's Eastern career marks stand test of time

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 13, 2014

Ron Cox marveled when he recently returned to the Eastern Washington University campus. Patterson Hall had just undergone a head-to-toe remodeling. "That was brand new when I came," Cox said when he first enrolled at the school in 1973. Some things sure do change over time. But others, like a bevy of school records on the basketball court set by Cox – career marks with 1,741 points and 1,273 rebounds – still remain intact after nearly 40 years. And that's why Cox joins fel...

  • Final shots don't fall for EWU in loss to Weber

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 13, 2014

In a game that started and ended for Eastern Washington with notable runs, time just ran out on the Eagles – and ultimately their season – last Saturday. But even as the precious final seconds ticked away they squeezed every bit out of the clock to try to improve on a 10-2 run over the game's final 2 minutes, 25 seconds. Drew Brandon's potential game-tying shot with seven seconds left missed, but he picked up the rebound and still fed Parker Kelly whose 3-point try from the...

    LU NELSEN, Contributor|Updated Mar 13, 2014

Our nation spent nearly $7 billion responding to extreme weather in 2013. Events that endanger livelihoods nationally, and especially in rural and small town America. These destructive storms, devastating droughts, dangerous flooding and paralyzing winter weather highlight the need for action. We must confront threats that climate shifts pose to rural communities, and the nation. The new year provides an opportunity to take commonsense steps to address carbon pollution, a major contributing factor to these threats....

  • Great strength can be found in even the worst circumstances

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 13, 2014

In the last few days, I have witnessed a new kind of strength that not many of my favorite superheroes could perform. I was originally scheduled to spend part of my Saturday with my younger sister Crystal — or Boo as we call her. She earned the nickname when she was 2, after she received a pair of boots that she refused to take off. The original plan was to see her in the morning, practice some driving and then have a quick lunch before I made the trip back to Cheney. I did get to see my sister this weekend, but not in the w...

  • It's a trashy life for Cheney apartment tenants

    Updated Mar 13, 2014

Cheney is a tight-knit, friendly town, home to many families and college students. Our secluded town, however, lacks one large component of a thriving community: A recycling system for residents and students living in Cheney apartment complexes. Each day the community throws away tons of garbage that ends up in landfills. A good majority of that trash is recyclable material. Currently, most apartment complexes are equipped with dumpsters, but not with recycling bins. It is up to the property owners of these complexes to help...
