  • The battle plan behind Eastern Washington football recruiting

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 5, 2015

Think you have a hard time picking out clothes to wear in the morning? Or choosing just the right item on the menu — not to mention the wine list? Then how about putting yourself in the shoes of Eastern Washington University football coaches, who just a month ago delivered the latest crop of 21 recruits, and are already busy preparing for the 2016 National Letter of Intent Day. Eastern’s defensive line coach, Ryan Sawyer, doubles as the team’s recruiting coordinator and spoke...

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Mar 5, 2015

The Eastern Washington University track and field team finished their indoor campaign on a high note on the final day of the Big Sky Conference Championships Feb. 28 in Flagstaff, Ariz. On the third day of competition, the Eagles walked away with four all-conference (top three finish) performances, including Big Sky titles in the men’s weight throw and women’s high jump. The women’s team earned the best finish in school history as they tied for fourth place with Portland State, and scored a school-record 68 points. The men’s...

  • Eastern women run into roadblock in Montana

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 5, 2015

The road had been reasonably smooth for the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team this season. After last week’s trip — with a pair of 10-point losses 63-53 at Montana State and to Montana, 69-59 — the operative word is “had.” Prior to last week, Eastern had won four of six Big Sky contests on the road. They counted one of their biggest program wins ever, a Dec. 22 victory, 67-56 at Florida and were 7-5 away from Reese Court. But their six-game Big Sky Conference winning...

  • Roos retires after 10-year NFL career

    FROM NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Mar 5, 2015

Michael Roos, who provided the lion’s share of funding to install the renown red turf in the stadium that helped him attain All-Pro status in the NFL, announced his retirement Feb. 26. “After 10 years as a Tennessee Titan I have decided to retire from football,” Roos wrote on Instagram. “I have given this decision much consideration.” The former Eastern Washington University and Tennessee Titans offensive tackle saw his 2014 season end due to a knee injury last Oct. 5. The injury required surgery and was a factor in Roos...

  • Another Saturday stumble stifles EWU title chase

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 5, 2015

A troubling pattern has emerged with the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team. In the last three weeks, the Eagles have won on Thursday, but lost each Saturday - and by excruciatingly close margins. Eastern lost 73-69 at Northern Arizona Feb. 21 and 68-66 at home to Portland State Feb. 14. The third such of those defeats, a 77-76 loss to Montana before a raucous Reese Court crowd of 4,621, Feb. 28, might have been the most damaging to the Eagles' hope of...

  • Roos left impressions on many

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Mar 5, 2015

Perhaps giving back is just in Michael Roos’ genes. Along with being grounded, humble, grateful and who knows what else. In today’s world of professional, and even college sports, those traits are sometimes lost — or have never been found with some athletes. Roos retired last week after a 10-year NFL career as an offensive tackle, his final season in 2014 cut short by a knee injury and subsequent surgery. The former Eastern Eagle, who graduated in 2005, was chosen as the n...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Mar 5, 2015

1 Years Ago March 3, 2005 The Eastern Washington University student activities office was considering opening the former 24 Frames Cinema as both a theater and a general recreation center. Some of the opposition by EWU to a proposed city of Cheney admission tax on university events was a matter that the school thought it was already being charged enough and provided “a great deal for the town.” Second-seeded Medical Lake earned a berth in the district playoffs and improved its record to 17-4 with a 51-36 win over Che...
