This year, he defeated Othello’s Jesus Montes in the finals of the consolation bracket by decision, 5-4. Wessels’ road to third place was not an easy one. In his first match, he came back from a 5-0 deficit to pin Abe...

  • Refs should be concerned about fighter safety, not who wins or loses

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 27, 2014

Whenever UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey wins a fight, it seems to cause a chain reaction where many mixed martial arts fans will voice their displeasure. But it wasn’t the champion this time that was the recipient of the crowd’s ire. Instead it was referee Herb Dean. After Rousey dropped her opponent Sara McMann with a knee to the liver and followed up with a couple of shots, Dean stepped in and stopped the fight. Fans quickly went on social media and declared their frustrations with the quick outcome. Some...

  • Eastern men slip up at home in 87-76 loss to Portland State

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 27, 2014

The road to the postseason for the Eastern Washington men's basketball team got a little bit dicey Monday night. And it had nothing to do with the unexpected dump of snow that perplexed some local weather predictors. The Portland State Vikings didn't let the roads - or their 2-7 record away from home - be of much concern and left Cheney with an 87-76 Big Sky Conference win that took the Eagles from possibly inching closer to a playoff berth to spinning their wheels, stuck in...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 27, 2014

The Eastern Washington women might just be late-bloomers. With their 0-5 start to the season very much a vanishing image in their rearview mirror, the Eagles have won six of their last seven games following a tense 61-60 win at Portland State Monday and a 59-54 triumph over Southern Utah last Thursday at home. Now Eastern, 10-6 in Big Sky play and 14-11 overall will close out the Reese Court portion of the regular season with games Thursday, Feb. 27 versus Northern Colorado...

  • Eagles, Bearkats begin season in nationally televised FCS Kickoff game at Roos Field

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 27, 2014

The red turf at Roos Field, nicknamed "The Inferno," might just really live up to its name. The likely dry heat of August will replace the cold of December in the Northwest and the humidity of fall in the Southeast as Eastern Washington and Sam Houston State University renew their recent football rivalry in the inaugural ESPN FCS Kickoff, Saturday, Aug. 23 in Cheney. News of the switch to an earlier season kickoff date for the game confirms an earlier story written by FCS...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Feb 27, 2014

1 Years Ago March 4, 2004 Construction projects at Eastern Washington University, and a boom in the building of both single and multi-family homes earned the city of Cheney a record $420,973 in building-related permit fees. U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary, Gail Norton, paid a visit to the Turnbull Wildlife Refuge and spoke to visitors about her agency’s Healthy Forests program. A proposal to rename Cheney’s Parkway Drive for longtime city engineer Dick Simpson slowed as questions began to surface over how the city...
