  • Eastern women get tough late, score crucial 78-70 win at SUU

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 21, 2013

A turnaround keyed by some solid defensive play in the final 10 minutes earned the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team both some redemption and a 78-70 Big Sky Conference victory over Southern Utah last Saturday night in Cedar City. “The last 10, maybe 15 minutes just defensively we were able to get some stops,” Eastern Washington University women’s head basketball coach Wendy Schuller said. The win kept Eastern (10-5 Big Sky, 14-10 overall) in third place i...

  • What future memories might emerge from boys’ day at Monsterjam?

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 21, 2013

A quick scan of iconic Norman Rockwell images of grandfathers and grandsons sharing special time includes traditions like fishing, ice-skating, raking leaves and just plain relaxing. Surely there are many more. The classic painter of traditional Americana died in November 1978 so his work never reflected the birth of monster trucks. But even had he lived to see their emergence in the early 1980s it’s likely his canvasses would never have depicted a young lad and a granddad p...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 21, 2013

The Cheney High girls’ basketball team came up a couple wins short of advancing in last week’s Great Northern League/District 7 playoffs. The fifth-seeded Lady Hawks opened with an upset of fourth-seeded Colville, but couldn’t find the right combination to know off either Spokane Valley 2A schools, falling in the second round to eventual district champion West Valley and eliminated the next day by East Valley. Cheney played the Knights close, trailing by two points after...

Returning to the top, this time in the 182-pound weight class, was senior Eli Mason, who pinned his first round opponent, Anacortes sophomore Aron Tisinger, in 1 minute. • Eagles toughen up to topple Thunderbirds

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 21, 2013

The first time Eastern Washington and Southern Utah met on the basketball court in a Big Sky Conference game the Eagles got pushed around – and lost 69-55 in Cedar City. Last Saturday, when pushed, Eastern pushed back and it helped earn them a rugged 86-72 victory at Reese Court. The win, the Eagles’ second straight, improved their BSC record to 6-9 and 8-17 overall. Southern Utah slipped to 8-8 in the league and 10-15 on the season. The outcome, combined with the Eag...

  • The hardest wheat turned soft by science

    Dr E KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Feb 21, 2013

Eighty years ago my mother was in grade school where schoolroom paste was made by mixing a little flour and water together. Memories of that simple glue came back to her when she and I recently stood in my kitchen, mixing two small batches of flour and water. First I mixed regular “better for bread” flour with water in a little dish, then I did the same with special test flour made from a new type of durum wheat. The first mixture was a pasty, lightest-of-light-tan color, the second had a pale but clearly evident yellow hue...

  • Just wondering about the oldest bee in Cheney

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Feb 21, 2013

How many people traversing the streets in Cheney have noticed the sign at the abandoned Conoco service station? If you are among the few who have seen it, you might be surprised at the number who haven’t. The sign says “oldest bee in town.” Translated into English with all letters intact the original message was “Coldest beer in town.” I’ve often wondered about that “bee.” Has he survived the winters? How old is he and how many years does a bee live? Imagine having a sign d...

  • Watch out, the drones are coming home to roost!

    Jim Hightower, Columnist|Updated Feb 21, 2013

For nearly four years, President Obama refused to admit a foreign-policy “secret” that was widely known here and throughout the world — namely, that the White House, Pentagon and CIA are engaged in ethically questionable and rapidly escalating drone warfare that’s killing innocent civilians as well as enemy soldiers in Afghanistan, Yemen and elsewhere. But by nominating John Brennan, the architect of this high-tech kill policy, to head the CIA, the president has let the drone out of the bag. In the past few days, both Br...

  • Obama is taking a page from ‘1984’ with media talking points

    Betsy McCaughey, Columnist|Updated Feb 21, 2013

In his famous novel “1984,” George Orwell warned that it doesn’t take a military boot against your neck to oppress you. Government can do it by using talking points — what Orwell called “newspeak” — to hide truth, distort language and keep the public in the dark. Orwell cautioned that this manipulation poses the biggest threat to freedom, whether the government doing the manipulating is right wing or left wing. President Obama seems to be taking a page from “1984.” The novel’s main character is a young bureaucrat living in a...

  • Build a better family for a better community

    Updated Feb 21, 2013

One of the Spokane’s most known and admired figures, Appeals Court Justice the late John Schultheis, once gave some advice to young lawyers in a 1999 Spokesman Review article to: “Spend more time in the raising of your kids.” It’s good advice not just for lawyers, but also for anyone who has chosen to have a family, natural or adopted. It’s also good advice that if followed, might lead to something many people in and out of government are advocating for: education reform. Federal, state and local spending on K-12 education...

  • Seasonal weight restrictions on Spokane County roads in effect

    Updated Feb 21, 2013

Spokane County’s Engineering and Roads Department announced Feb. 13 that seasonal weight restrictions would be implemented on county roads – effective immediately. Roadway surfaces and the structures beneath the surface have become weakened during this winter’s cycle of freezing temperatures, followed by warmer temperatures and precipitation. As a result, roads are vulnerable to severe damage and the implementation of weight restrictions reduces the need for increased road maintenance and auto repairs later this year. Roads...

  • Donations decline for Medical Lake Outreach

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 21, 2013

A 33 percent decline in donations plagued the Medical Lake Community Outreach last year, severely limiting its ability to provide help for residents in the city and surrounding areas. “We help people who can’t pay their water bill or are about to get their power disconnected,” treasurer Joyce Callaway said. When a family isn’t able to meet their monthly utility bill, Outreach is able to speak directly to utility companies and lend some assistance. “We work on their behalf to try and negotiate with the power company,...

  • Cheney preps for power line clearance work

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 21, 2013

It may not seem like it yet but spring isn’t too far off, and with that in mind the city of Cheney is beginning its process of clearing away trees and vegetation around local power conductors. It’s a practice Cheney has done for years, with work being subcontracted to local arborist firms beginning in 2001. Prior to that it was city crews doing the trimming, with results sometimes not so complimentary to the trees, let alone landowners desires. “They’re (city crews) basically line workers and not certified arborists so we t...

  • Tension at ML council meeting

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 21, 2013

The Medical Lake City Council was described as having done nothing to enhance the city or the community at its Tuesday, Feb. 19 meeting. Medical Lake resident and food bank president Bob Kibling spoke at length regarding a lack of support for the annual Founder’s Day celebration in the city. Kibling ended his two-year run of organizing the festival last year. Since then, few people have been interested in volunteering and organizing the event, leaving it to the city’s parks and recreation coordinator, Ashlee King, to tak...
