  • Eastern women collect crucial Big Sky road sweep

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 19, 2015

Eastern Washington stayed in the hunt for a Big Sky Conference women's basketball regular season title last week, and did so on the road. They kept their place in what appears to be another neck-and-neck race to the finish by scoring a come-from-behind 80-79 victory last Thursday at Sacramento State and a 77-63 win at Portland State. The Eagles have won four straight games and improved to 8-4 in conference play, 15-8 overall, and trail league leader Montana (10-3) heading into...

Nick Reed at 113 pounds and Ian O’Brien (285) will venture to the Tacoma Dome this Friday and Saturday and play the waiting game in case others in their weight classes cannot compete. “The region was very tough, especially our league,” Medical Lake head coach Sam Petersen said. “The other district (Region 4) only had three w...

  • Cardinal girls grab historic district playoff berth

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 19, 2015

There appears to be a different team lately playing in the uniforms of the Medical Lake High School girls’ basketball team. It’s one that has won 5 of 7 games since Jan. 24 and collected back-to-back victories over Riverside last week to take a historical trip down the district playoff trail. Cardinals 2.0 are a much different, and apparently improved version of the team first year head coach Kyle Lundberg started with back in November. That’s helping both the defense and o...

  • Blackhawks boys end season with 70-42 playoff loss at Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 19, 2015

The Cheney High boys’ basketball season came to an end last Thursday in first-round playoff action on the hardwood at Pullman High School’s gym. The host Greyhounds’ stymied the Blackhawks for most of the evening, holding Cheney to just three points in the first quarter en route to a 38-16 lead at the half and eventual 70-42 final. Cheney’s Keenan Williams led the Blackhawks offensively with nine points to go with seven rebounds. Junior guard Gaige Felix added seven points. The Blackhawks finished the season at 1-11 in Grea...

  • Surprise: Lady Blackhawks eliminate No. 2 WV

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 19, 2015

The Cheney High School girls' basketball team saved the best for last. The Lady Blackhawks ended a seven-game losing streak and notched their first win over a Great Northern League opponent with a 48-46 opening round playoff road win over second-seeded West Valley last Thursday. Cheney led 28-22 at the half, partly through poor free throw shooting from the Eagles, who made just three of 10 from the line in the first 16 minutes. In the final 16 minutes, West Valley rallied,...

  • Good-bye for now

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 19, 2015

This is my final Crunch Time column. Originally, the column was established by myself and former Cheney Free Press sports reporter Neil Pierson back in the fall of 2003 mainly as a vehicle with which to comment on issues taking place in sports, with the occasional somewhat-free-form personality feature or local feel-good story thrown in. After over 12-and-a-half years, maybe you run out of things to say, or you just get tired of saying things. Whatever, it’s time to step aside. Cheney Free Press staff reporters Paul D...

  • Cheney/Spokane finalist for 'Sky basketball tourney

FROM STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Feb 19, 2015

The Eastern Washington University men’s and women’s basketball teams are trying hard to deliver the 2015 Big Sky Conference tournament to Reese Court the second week of March by winning the regular season championships. But a group from EWU and the Spokane Regional Sports Commission is hoping to make Cheney and Spokane the permanent home for future tournaments beginning in 2016. A bid to stage both the men’s and women’s tournaments beginning in 2016 at sites that include both Reese Court and the Spokane Arena is among t...

  • Banged up Eagles limp into Big Sky lead

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 19, 2015

A battle-scarred Eastern Washington men's basketball team survived its biggest week of the season after all. By holding off Sacramento State 64-61 Feb. 12, the Eagles got a crucial win in their quest to win the Big Sky Conference regular season championship and host the postseason tournament. But when Portland State rallied to win 68-66 Saturday afternoon at Reese Court, the gains made Thursday appeared neutralized. However, after the University of Idaho hung a second...

  • Medical Lake boys earn upper hand in district play

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 19, 2015

The Medical Lake boys' basketball team knew they would likely face the Riverside Rams in at least two games. But playing the equivalent of an entire playoff series with their Northeast A League rivals seemed unlikely. However, that's the way things have worked out. The two teams were to have met for a third consecutive game in the initial District 7 1A playoff game Feb. 17. The "series" began Feb. 10 with the final NEA regular season game, a 50-39 Medical Lake win at home...

  • Messages from intelligent people

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Feb 19, 2015

I have gathered these quotes which make me smile. I have not intended to insult or besmirch those who innocently caused the smile. Listen carefully. An important person who often roams the hallways of Cheney’s prestigious farming establishments recently said, “including the red pepper, (a recent breed of fly), Cheney has the best crime rate in saving the “yellow jacket” from Cheney’s population. Don’t all-important people roam the hallways of Cheney’s prestigious farming establishments? A busy ROTC instructor who decides w...
