    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Jan 25, 2018

The Cheney High School Blackhawks concluded the Great Northern League regular season on Jan. 17 with a 51-22 loss at East Valley High School. Overall, Cheney finished 1-3 in the league. “We wrestled really tough,” head coach Brad Rasmussen said. “It was nice to go through the lineup and see some good things everywhere.” The first Blackhawk to earn a win against East Valley was Teagan Simon at 120 pounds, pinning his opponent in 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Dylan Straley continued that success at 126 pounds, defeating his competi...

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Cheney High School gymnastics soared at their last meet on Jan. 17, taking first place overall as a team with 158.750 points. Shadle Park High School hosted the meet with Lewis and Clark, Rogers and North Central also participating. “The girls had a great meet,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “This meet was a great way to end the regular GSL regular season. The girls did an awesome job modifying their floor routines to accommodate tumbling on wrestling mats instead of a spring floor. Some of our top bar athletes did a wonde...

  • Lady Blackhawks down Pullman, lose to Clarkston, East Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 25, 2018

The Cheney High girls basketball team went 1-2 in Great Northern League action last week. The Lady Blackhawks sandwiched a win at Pullman in between a pair of losses to the league's top-two teams, Clarkston and East Valley. Cheney couldn't find a way to get on top of the visiting Knights last Tuesday, getting outscored in each quarter in a 60-48 loss to the state's top-ranked 2A team. • Blackhawks suffer another one that got away

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Losing to Clarkston hurt. It’s been a while since a Cheney High boys basketball team was able to say that, but the Blackhawks 56-54 setback to the visiting Bantams in Great Northern League action last Saturday was not only felt in the standings, but afterwards in the locker room. For head coach Gregg Smith, the impact on his players is because they are in a position where all of the games mean something — especially for the postseason. Leading by five at the half, Cheney had one of those third quarters where whatever was dis...

  • Schuller reflects on past with milestone 500th game at Eastern

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Wendy Schuller does not remember her first game as a Division I head coach at Eastern Washington University, but she certainly recalls that first victory. Having spent 17 years and over 500 games as EWU’s head women’s basketball coach is reason enough to have a slightly blurred memory. “The reason I remember that was the coach of Hartford was Jen Rizzotti, who was one of the great UConn point guards,” Schuller said. Sure enough, the coach was right. Her Eagles topped the Haw...

The Cheney High boys swimming team wrapped up its regular season schedule by going 2-1 in Great Northern League/Central Washington Athletic Conference action last week. The Blackhawks downed the visiting Grandview Greyhounds and Prosser Mustangs, 102-31 and 86-56, last Thursday in the home finale at Eastern Washington University's pool, but finished the season with a 126-32 loss at unbeaten Pullman Saturday. Walker Ross led the Blackhawks in scoring against the Greyhounds,...

  • Medical Lake boys run NEA winning streak to four

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 25, 2018

The Medical Lake boys basketball team might be finding their stride just at the right time. At least that's the hint head coach Noel Hachtel dropped following his team collecting three Northeast A League wins last week, and extending their overall win streak to four. The recent streak comes after the Cardinals endured an earlier five-game losing streak. The Cardinals beat Riverside 67-42 on Jan. 15 in Medical Lake, won 80-70 on the road in Chewelah last Friday and completed...

  • There's plenty for Legans to love in life's journey

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Even if his introduction to Eastern Washington University didn't have much of a welcome mat at the door, Eagle men's head basketball coach Shantay Legans has found plenty to love ever since. Sure, there's the job, that as one of just over 300 such positions in the country. But there's Legans also being in the right place at the right time to inherit a program with air in all its tires, a pretty good motor and plenty of gas in its tank. He earned the promotion last March 29...

  • Vote yes on Feb. 13 ML for school district levy

    Updated Jan 25, 2018

On Feb. 13, Medical Lake schools face an important election. By voting yes for the levy proposals on the ballot you will guarantee our schools stay strong. There are two proposals on the ballot this year. The first is a three-year Educational Programs and Operations levy that will maintain many important programs and staffing for our classrooms. It is a replacement levy. The Medical Lake School District Educational Programs and Operations Levy supports many educational programs and activities such as band, choir, after...

  • ML propositions worth the 'yes' votes

    Updated Jan 25, 2018

My wife and I would like to encourage the voters, of Medical Lake School District 326, to vote “yes” on the upcoming ballot Feb. 13. The two propositions are vital for continuing a high standard of education for our community’s children. We haven’t had children in school for over 15 years but feel that it is paramount that the district have the funds to make our children successful and are in full support of the district. Please vote “yes” on Propositions 1 (replacement educational programs and operations levy) and 2 (capi...

  • Cheney's levy is needed to support programs that the state won't help with

    Updated Jan 25, 2018

It’s time for the Cheney School District to ask the community to vote for a replacement educational programs and operation levy. Although it is the duty of the state to provide for “Basic Education,” the reality is that many of the programs we consider important for our children are not covered by the state. They fund most of our teachers and educational staff, but they don’t pay for all of the needed staff for smaller class sizes and school support. They don’t fund sports or extra-curricular activities, and they don’t pay...

  • Lawmakers must follow the law, which means the U.S. Constitution

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated Jan 25, 2018

The Washington State Legislature is back in session debating ways to balance the budget while fully funding schools and trying to end run the Constitution on gun control. Encouraged by our state attorney general and governor, we have joined 15 other states considering state laws to limit the size of magazines, outlaw bump stocks and ban assault rifles. I have no real problem with any of these restrictions. I don’t even care much for pistols. I used to have one and discovered it was only useful if I wanted to shoot my n...

  • Suicide touches people in more ways than you might think

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 25, 2018

It’s unfortunate, to say the least, but suicide seems to be in the news lately, especially in our area. The death last week of Washington State University quarterback Tyler Hilinski has garnered much regional and national attention. What draws me to write this column is something a bit closer to home — a suicide that took place Monday evening in Cheney. We don’t know who the individual was, at least as of this writing. It’s possible we may never know, despite statements by law enforcement that the victim’s name will be releas...

  • New AD hire should mean different approach at EWU

    Updated Jan 25, 2018

With news that the occupant of the athletics director’s chair at Eastern Washington University will be changing in the near future, now is the perfect time to reexamine what the time ahead looks like for the institution. As Bill Chaves, the AD for the past 10-plus years, departs to the University of North Dakota for greener pastures— literally with a nice raise, a much bigger department budget and figuratively overseeing teams wearing the color — Eastern knows the challenges that lie ahead. The biggest of those is figur...
