The Cheney City Council passed a six-month, emergency ordinance at its Nov. 12 meeting establishing interim zoning and land use regulation that would determine where potential marijuana retailers, processors and producers can locate in the city. • 3-D movies and the effects on vision

    Dr Scott Borgholthaus, Contributor|Updated Nov 14, 2013

Lens and Iris were watching trailers for upcoming movies. When the food advertisements started, Iris asked Lens, ”Could you go get us some popcorn?” Lens replied, “Don’t have to; this is a 3-D movie, and the food’ll come floating by any moment.” Have you experienced troubles watching the new 3-D movies at the theatre? Do they make you feel eye strain, double or blurred vision? It’s often due to problems using both eyes together in a coordinated manner. For instance, a need for correction change, especially if one eye needs...

  • Travis Gallagher finds familiarity in the auto business

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Nov 14, 2013

Cheney Auto Care Center is a very familiar place for Travis Gallagher. His dad, Chris Gallagher, owns the business. When Travis was very young, like a lot of boys, he didn’t mind getting a little grease on his hands or fetching a tool to help his dad. When he was in the sixth-grade he began to help in the shop. At age 16, Travis was driving a motorcycle. He said, “My senior year in high school I thought about joining the military, then changed my mind.” Now at age 19 he has been thinking lately about going to Spokane Falls Co...

    Updated Nov 14, 2013

Congratulations to the Medical Lake boys’ cross country team. I’m proud of the total effort that coach Gene Blankenship and his assistant coaches put in with the team. All summer at 8 a.m. in the morning when I was going to work I would see Coach and his team meeting at the school to start their training. When I went down to the school Saturday night to welcome them hom...

  • Thanks for support, encouragement in City Council run

    Updated Nov 14, 2013

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who supported and encouraged me to run for City Council. It was an interesting and valuable experience to learn about the issues of the city, the concerns of our citizens and politics in general. Mr. Taves ran an outstanding campaign and I want to personally congratulate him on his victory. He is a very intelligent, thoughtful, hardworking individual and I believe he will continue to make Cheney one of the best places to live in the state of Washington. Thanks again....

  • Sometimes it takes a community to find a lost dog

    Updated Nov 14, 2013

On Oct. 23 our black lab, Enzo, twisted out of his collar and escaped as we were walking him behind the Blackhawk Vet Clinic. My husband was able to follow him for several miles and stopped pursuing him as he watched him enter the Turnbull Wildlife Refuge along Cheney-Plaza Road just past the Columbia Trail. We spent the next 11 days searching for him, posting signs, running ads, passing out flyers, and calling on a friend to bring his tracking dog, Radar, whenever we had a fresh sighting. It turned out that Enzo had made...

  • Reviewing the Nov. 5 election numbers review can be revealing

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2013

Among my many habits, be they good or bad, is an interest in studying numbers and, in some people’s minds, worthless trivia. My wife might argue that knowing and caring about numbers in the checking account, or remembering the names of couples we run into occasionally, are a much more important endeavor than being able to recite various sports statistics or care about yearly data on the flows of rivers across the region. The big difference I’d counter would be my kno...

  • Wasn't special session to be about transportation?

    Updated Nov 14, 2013

According to news reports, the recently concluded Washington Legislature’s special session was called to address a $10 billion transportation package and “other legislation” that would keep production of Boeing’s new 777X project in the state. Apparently that “other legislation” was more important. Legislators took just three days to pass a package extending aerospace industry tax breaks to the year 2040 that will be worth over $8 billion to Boeing. Those breaks could be canceled if the aerospace giant moves constructio...

MacKenna Jones' Fallen Soldier memorial statue at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake was unveiled in a big way this month. "I grew up around veterans and my dad is one, too. The memorial statue was unveiled Saturday, Nov. 2 at the veterans cemetery, featuring numerous community groups...

  • Students, faculty argue against EWU move to semesters

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 14, 2013

If Eastern Washington University’s debate about moving from quarters to semester systems were scored like a baseball game, the outcome would be obvious: Quarters 2, Semesters 1. Representatives from Eastern’s faculty organization and the associated students presented information against a change to the university’s board of trustees at a town hall meeting last Friday while administration officials offered results from research lobbying for the move. The administration’s report estimates the cost of the move at over $8.4 mi...

  • This summer's thunderstorms proved to be rare events for region

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2013

For those residents who thought that some of our sudden big precipitation thunderstorms that rolled through the region throughout the summer might have been out of place, you’re right. “If we’re going to get any thunderstorms, they tend to be in the springtime, in May and June,” Bob Quinn, Eastern Washington University professor of meteorology said. “They are a combination of the North Pacific storm track tapping into that subtropical moisture off of California.” Following 201...

  • Another run-of-the-mill winter predicted for region

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2013

Like the exacting clock one has on their cellphone that automatically changes crossing time zones or when it’s Daylight Savings Time, fall arrived almost as if on cue. Seemingly within minutes of the official entrance of the Autumnal Equinox at 1:44 p.m. back on Sept. 22 a turbulent dust storm, followed by a welcome cleansing rain, rolled across the region. And while the rest of early and mid fall was pleasant and very dry, as Bob Quinn, Eastern Washington University p...

    Updated Nov 14, 2013

A near head-on collision on SR 904 sent three people to a local hospital Saturday afternoon. According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, at approximately 4:45 p.m. an eastbound, black, 2002 Volkswagen Golf two-door sedan driven by 47-year-old Curtis R. Cooley of Spokane Valley attempted to pass multiple vehicles in a no-passing lane at milepost 13 near the intersection of SR 904 and Paradise Road. Cooley’s vehicle essentially sideswiped a green, 2000 two-door Honda Accord drive by Raquel H. Caballero, 21, of Cheney, i...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2013

The U.S. Air Force has scheduled numerous public hearings across the country for the public to comment on a draft Environmental Impact Statement regarding the rollout of its new KC-46A fleet. One of those is coming to Spokane, due to Fairchild Air Force Base being chosen as an alternative location for the main operating base. Earlier this year, McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas narrowly beat the West Plains base in the running to station the first set of new aircraft....

  • AH budget remains similar to 2013

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 14, 2013

Airway Heights is in the middle of another budgeting season, working to create a balanced budget for 2014. The budget still has a $126,000 gap in the current expense fund, which the city is working to close. Also still hanging in the balance are contract negotiations for public safety guild employees. As a result, cost of living adjustments and medical coverage adjustments aren’t factored in at the moment. This marked the second public hearing regarding the budget, following the first Oct. 21 to discuss revenue sources. A p...

  • Revenue will keep Cheney Fire at maintenance levels

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 14, 2013

Like all other city departments relying on general fund tax revenue, the Cheney Fire Department is hoping to do at least as much in the way of service in 2014 as they have in 2013 – and with not a whole lot more revenue. The Fire Department is proposing a 2014 budget of $1,581,400, most of which would come out of a combination of revenue resources that make up the city’s projected $6,787,500 general fund budget. Fire Chief Mike Winters said in an email the department’s proposal is $30,100 more than last year, just under...
