  • Finally – Lady Hawks win at Clarkston

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 24, 2013

It may not be the same Clarkston team that won the 2A state girls basketball title last week, but that didn’t make the Cheney Lady Hawks win over the Bantams last Friday any less sweet. Cheney had one of its best offensive nights this season, shooting 49 percent from the field – including 62 percent from 3-point range – and hauling down 16 offensive rebounds, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit to down Clarkston 66-62. It’s the Lady Hawks first win in the Bantams home gym since 1993. According to team statist...

A van wreck following Wednesday’s shoot-around injured seniors Kevin Winford and Jeffrey Forbes, knocking them out of the lineup for a pair of games the Eagles lost 65-47 to NDU and 72-56 in Greeley to Northern Colorado Saturday. • Medical Lake girls go 1-2 in hot, cold week

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 24, 2013

Medical Lake head girls’ basketball coach Carey Schwarzer got her wish for a complete game and a big win. But just like the fairy tale where the coach turned into a pumpkin at midnight, her Cardinals soon returned to old form with a pair of losses. The Cardinals defeated Riverside 54-42 this past Tuesday to snap a three-game losing stream but losses at home, 38-35 to Kettle Falls, and Saturday’s 58-26 humbling at the hands of Freeman leave ML in the middle of a three-way tie...

  • Blackhawks stay in race for playoff high seed with road split

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 24, 2013

The Cheney boys’ basketball team thought they did everything needed to pull off a rare road win in Clarkston last Friday, but cold shooting and a career night for a Bantams role player proved the Blackhawks undoing. Cheney held Clarkston scoring leaders Kage Sobotta and Trevor Sperry to a combined 24 points, but the Bantams clamped a lid on Cheney’s basket in the third quarter while sophomore C.J. Johnson poured in a game and season-high 20 points to hand Cheney a 55-42 loss. “He (Johnson) hurt us,” Blackhawks head coach J...

  • Adams is FCS ‘Freshman of the Year’

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jan 24, 2013

He split time at quarterback, but that was enough to impress the College Sporting News, as Eastern Washington University freshman Vernon Adams joined four other Eagles on the “Fabulous 50” NCAA Football Championship Subdivision All-America team. Adams was selected as CSN’s Freshman of the Year after sharing the quarterback position with transfer Kyle Padron. Besides Adams, four other Eagles were selected to the All-America squad – wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, offensi...

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 24, 2013

That sound the Chewelah Cougars hear is the Medical Lake Cardinals’ close pursuit of them in the Northeast A League boys’ basketball standings. Following a 3-0 week with wins 41-30 over Riverside, 64-45 Friday when they hosted Kettle Falls and their 54-37 conquest Saturday at Freeman, the Cards trail the Cougs by a game as the regular season winds to a conclusion. The Cardinals have now won five of their last six games and sit 8-1 in the NEA standings, 11-5 in all games. Med...
