  • Cheney holds its own against Deer Park

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Facing one of the most potent lineups in the Great Northern League, Cheney wrestlers held their own against Deer Park last Wednesday, Jan. 9. Although Deer Park started off with eight straight wins, Cheney was able to recoup some of its losses. Against a league-leading team like Deer Park, the effort proved to be a strong performance for Cheney. Deer Park ended up winning 46-27. “I really thought we wrestled fairly well against them,” head coach Wade Schlotter said in an email. After a struggling start, Schlotter said Che...

  • Medical Lake girls’ coach knows what needs fixing

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2013

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake head girl’s basketball coach Carey Schwarzer seems to have the diagnosis dialed in. Now it’s finding the cure for what ails her Cardinals following a disappointing 33-30 Northeast A League loss last Tuesday to the Chewelah Cougars. “We just didn’t come ready to play at the start and we tried to pull it out in the end,” Schwarzer said. The loss was ML’s third straight and dropped them to 1-5 in league play and 5-8 overall while Chewe...

  • Cold shooting dooms Cardinals in Chewelah showdown

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Two things stood out in the mind of Medical Lake head basketball coach Arnold Brown following his team’s 47-37 Northeast A League home court defeat to Chewelah last Tuesday. Lack of shooting prowess on the part of his Cardinals and the experience the Cougars put on the court. First the shooting. Medical Lake shot a dismal 6 of 28 from 3-point range for 21 percent, this after connecting on 45 percent in the previous five league games. This was part of the problem as Chewelah r...

  • Injuries play part in Lady Hawks’ losses

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Some of the Cheney girls’ basketball team’s woes last week can be boiled down to one word – injuries. Injuries forced head coach Jennifer Harmer to jockey players around to different positions looking for working combinations on a squad that is dealing also with youth and varsity inexperience. Top it off with two of three games against the top two teams in the Great Northern League, and it was a recipe for three losses, four straight now for the Lady Hawks. Chae Brown, Chene...

  • EWU’s amazing rally stuns SFU

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Eastern Washington University’s men’s hockey team got the second half of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season off to a perfect start in more ways than one. The Eagles snapped out of a three-game losing streak and did so by scoring a dramatic come-from-behind 8-7 win over perennial power Simon Fraser last Friday at the University Rec Center. “Sometimes you dig yourself a hole so large you can’t get out of it, but this group of guys never gave up and jus...

  • Eastern women hope to pick up pieces in home stand

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jan 17, 2013

The Eastern Washington’s women’s basketball team finally gets to spend a couple of weekends at home. And following a pair of losses last week, 83-68 at Northern Arizona Thursday and 85-70 at Sacramento State Saturday, they need to make the best of that time at Reese Court. Schuller remains stuck one win shy of her 150th victory in her 12 years as Eastern’s head coach. This week’s games include a contest tonight (Jan. 17) at 6:05 versus Big Sky Conference newcomer North Dakota (2-4 BSC, 7-8 overall) and then Saturday for a 2...

  • Reese Court sweep evades EWU men

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Last week’s Big Sky Conference home games for the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team were a tale of two different games with two entirely different beginnings, and outcomes. The Eagles had a slow start but rallied from an early deficit in an easy 82-59 win over Northern Arizona last Thursday night at Reese Court. Saturday, Eastern had a big lead early but flailed around in futility before suffering a 60-53 crusher loss to Sacramento State (3-3, 8-6). The res...

  • Blackhawks swim to trio of wins in busy week

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Cheney High’s boys swimming team has been busy since the beginning of the year. In fact, really busy over seven days – three meets, five teams and a trio of wins. The Blackhawks opened 2013 with a pair of wins in a Jan. 5 meet with Prosser and Grandview at Lion’s Pool in Yakima, beating the Mustangs 78-61 and Grandview, score not available at press time. Jeff Edwards and Scott Nadeau led the Blackhawks with wins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:30.95) and the 100 butte...

  • Blackhawks need rallies for wins

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 17, 2013

Cheney boys basketball head coach Joel Soter thinks if his Blackhawks can start games quicker offensively, they may not need to rally so furiously at the end. As evidence one can look at last week’s box scores where the Blackhawks, while going 2-1, split a pair of overtime games with East and West Valley and needed a big fourth quarter to get out of Colville with a nine-point win. Cheney’s need for early leads can best be illustrated by Friday’s home contest with the Eagle...

  • ESPN execs might want to try a little awareness training with their announcers

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 17, 2013

If ESPN is the pinnacle of the sports reporting world, then I’m glad right now I’m down here in the ruts. Right now the sporting network giant is fast becoming an expert at apologizing. In the past week they’ve said “We’re sorry” more times than President Murkin Muffley made the same utterances to the Soviet Union’s premier in the movie “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” Let’s recap. First, is Robert Parker, a panelist on the network’s “First Take” program. In a Dec. 14 airing of the show...
