  • Tax cut is for the rich only

    Updated Jan 11, 2018

In her Email to constituents, Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers exclaimed “This is huge!” And indeed it is HUGE! The recently-passed tax bill is a HUGE boondoggle for the rich! The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates that, under the law, the middle fifth of American households will see an average increase in after-tax income next year of $930 while the top 1 percent gets an average increase of $51,140! This is paid for by an approximately 1.5 trillion dollar increase in national debt over 10 years (nonpartisan Con...

  • Maybe we should be judging ourselves

    Updated Jan 11, 2018

The city of San Francisco recently erected a statue honoring those who were “Comfort Women” of the Japanese army of occupation in China and Korea during World War II. The effort was spearheaded by two American judges of Asian ancestry. They cite sources that estimate over 200,000 women in the occupied region were forced to serve as sex slaves for the Japanese soldiers. The Japanese government disputes these allegations as, “One sided interpretations.” They claim local entrepreneurs recruited these women to work as prostit...

  • Good manners still count in business today

    Updated Jan 11, 2018

Our parents drilled into our heads that saying “please” and “thank you” were not only part of everyday life, but were essential to operating a successful business. They are the basic ingredients of “Good Manners.” For more than 30 years, our family owned and operated the garbage collection business for Walkerville, a small incorporated Montana city north of Butte. It was part-time operation, which required about 8 hours a week. In the early 1950s, our family posted a $100 bond and took it over. Previous owners thought it...

  • 'Darkest Hour,' brings odd sunshine to a dreary day

    Updated Jan 11, 2018

On a soggy Seattle-like Sunday with no Seahawks to watch in the NFL playoffs, and Cooper Kupp’s Los Angeles Rams sidelined the night before, the vote was to stay indoors. Inside a theater that is, to see what all the buzz was about over the film, “Darkest Hour.” You may or may not have heard the word about the cinematic effort to tell the story of about a month in time, now close to 80 years ago, that arguably may very well have been one of the most important turning points in world history. Its central character is Winst...

  • To end racism, we need to get to know one another

    Updated Jan 11, 2018

As we approach the Martin Luther King holiday — with some people actually getting Monday, Jan. 15, off — it’s appropriate to take a look at how Americans perceive the current state of race relations. That perception is not good, with statistics varying depending upon which organization is doing the research. A Pew Research Center survey conducted Nov. 29 – Dec. 4, 2017 among 1,503 adults found that 60 percent of Americans believe race relations have grown worse. A similar poll in November 2016 showed 46 percent felt this wa...

She now has 1,745 points and is just 91 away from breaking her older sister Hayley Hodgins’ career record of 1,865....

    Grace Pohl|Updated Jan 11, 2018

The Cheney High School wrestling team fell 40-37 to Clarkston in a close Great Northern League match on Wednesday, Jan. 3. With the loss, the Blackhawks sit in third place in the league behind East Valley and Clarkston with a 1-1 record. That was not the only wrestling this past week for Cheney as they hosted the Blackhawk Invite on Jan. 6. Cheney placed sixth overall out of the 15 teams competing with Medical Lake winning the team title. "The results against Clarkston was...

  • Beat ya' to it

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Jan 11, 2018

Eastern Washington's Jacob Davison swooped in to swat away a shot from Portland State's Michael Mayhew in last Thursday's 81-74 Big Sky Conference basketball victory. Eastern plays the final game of their homestand in a unique doubleheader with the EWU women this Friday, Jan. 12, against the University of Idaho at Reese Court. The women tip off at 5 p.m. with the men's game to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game....

  • Medical Lake boys stumble after holiday break

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 11, 2018

It was certainly not the kind of teams anyone wants to face, anytime. But when the Medical Lake boys had to open the 2018 portion of their basketball schedule against a pair of top-10 teams in the state's RPI rankings -now No. 1 Freeman and No. 7 Newport - fresh off of a lengthy holiday break, the task was even less enviable. And it showed as the Cardinals (3-3 Northeast A, 4-5 overall) hit the new year with rust in their game following two weeks-plus off and lost 57-43 at...

Spokane, University and Shadle Park. “This was the best meet of the season by far,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “We had a few minor errors, but no major break downs. • Cheney earns league split with Clarkston, Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 11, 2018

The Cheney High girls basketball team opened the 2018 portion of their schedule with a convincing win against Pullman, but may have let one slip away on the road at Clarkston two days later. The Lady Blackhawks held a 34-33 lead against the Bantams heading into the fourth quarter, but let that slip away and then some, getting outscored 20-8 en route to a 55-42 setback last Friday. Second-year Cheney head coach Lorin Carlon said the Bantams full-court pressure was what proved to be the difference as the Lady Blackhawks...

  • Seahawks' rushing woes could be solved through the draft

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 11, 2018

It’s no secret that one of the biggest disappointments with this year’s Seattle Seahawks — one that helped contribute to them missing the playoffs for the first time in six years — was the lack of a running game. OK, there was also a still somewhat ineffective offensive line and a similar situation with the kicking game. The former are making progress and the latter was hopefully remedied by the potential moving on from the Blair Witch Walsh project with the acquisition of Jason Myers from Jacksonville. We’ll wait and see....

  • Blackhawks hold off Bantams for first win in Clarkston since 2010

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 11, 2018

The Cheney High boys basketball team showed a bit of rustiness in their first game back from the New Year’s break in a 65-47 loss to visiting Pullman Jan. 3. Fortunately, the Blackhawks shook off that rust to do something they have only done once before in 15 years — pull off a win on the road at Clarkston. Cheney battled and clawed its way to a 57-49 win over the Bantams last Friday, its first road victory at Clarkston in seven years and second since 2002. “I loved it because it was tight the whole game,” head coach Gregg S...

  • Cardinal girls finally get into high gear

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 11, 2018

When the Medical Lake girls returned to finally playing basketball in game conditions Jan. 2, there might have been the perception that they did so in a lower gear during a 64-43 Northeast A League win at Newport. The Cardinals quickly found overdrive, and tossed in a little nitro-methane to get all the cylinders firing to the max last Friday with a 53-22 victory over visiting Freeman to keep their NEA record perfect at 5-0 and 8-0 overall. "We hadn't had a game in 17 days,...

  • Cardinals earn stunning wrestling wins

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 11, 2018

Medical Lake wrestlers certainly surpassed all expectations last week. In the span of three days the Cardinals scored their biggest win in years, edging the Freeman Scotties 40-36 on Jan. 4. Then last Saturday came a bigger surprise when Medical Lake finished tops among 15 teams to win the Blackhawk Invite in Cheney. They edged runner-up Quincy 161–149. "Not bad, not a bad week," head coach Matt Leenhouts said. Freeman was ranked No. 5 among 1A teams in the state and L...
