The Cheney girls’ basketball team opened the 2014 Great Northern League season with a much-needed win at Deer Park. The Lady Hawks, led by the scoring of Shyann Morton and Kayla Lemelin, blew open a 7-5 game after one quarter by outscoring the Stags (1-8, 0-1) 27-10 over the next 16 minutes en route to the win. Vernon and Laura Billiau lived at Cheney years ago for a short time. Laura's brother, Michael Dooley had a home here and they came to visit him. Yes, a Dooley is a real Irishman. Norman M. Peterson died peacefully on Dec. 28, 2013 at Cheney Care Center in Cheney Wash. He was born Aug. 19, 1920 in Minneapolis Minn. He lived to see 93 years. Norm is survived by his wife, Esther of 26 years and two stepchildren, Gary McGill of Bellingham and Judi Edwards of Cheney. He was predeceased by both his parents and two younger brothers. Drivers, who go along Sunset Highway, might see a new addition along West Sunset Highway. Rich Plesek, owner of Rich’s Transmission and Auto, moved his shop to a new location at 13216 West Sunset Highway back in August 2013. His shop was previously located at 1615 South Campbell. Drivers along Highway 2 may have found it difficult to drive home as a truck pulling a spotlight trailer caught fire near O’Reilly’s Auto Parts in Airway Heights, Jan. 6. .According to officials, the Airway Heights Fire Department received a call, at 4:35 p.m., about a reckless driver, after witnesses noticed smoke emitting from the vehicle. The Airway Heights City Council began their new year by reappointing a familiar face to the council. During the Jan. 6 regular meeting, the council appointed Kevin Richey as the deputy mayor to the city for another two years.
