The city of Cheney will hold two public hearings next week, one that will determine how residential and commercial development looks in coming years and another that will be the first of its kind. The latter is a hearing by the hearing examiner on Tuesday, Jan. 14, on a conditional use application for building a marijuana production and processing facility in the city’s Commerce and Industrial Park. The applicant, Cheney Hydroponics, is proposing construction of a 6,650 square foot structure of which 5,250 square feet w...

  • Dr. King's Lessons for the Climate Justice Movement

    JOSE-ANTONIO OROSCO, Contributor|Updated Jan 13, 2014

Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize. One of the most striking aspects of his acceptance speech is the hope he expressed in humanity’s ability to overcome war. This was no mere idealism on his part. Less than five years earlier, the world had come to the brink of thermonuclear destruction because of Cuba. The United States and Soviet Union eventually diminished their threats and, in 1963, signed and ratified an agreement to end the open-air nuclear testing that was blanketing the planet with radi...

  • Cardinals turn tables on Stags for 60-58 victory

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 10, 2014

Medical Lake's strong start was just enough to allow them to hold off Deer Park 60-58 in a nonleague basketball game last Saturday in Deer Park. It was a stark turnaround for the Cardinals who, on Dec. 6, were hammered at home 75-56 by the 2A Stags from the Great Northern League and showed Medical Lake head coach Arnold Brown that things might be slowly falling in place as league play shifts into high gear. "We're doing a lot better job of playing through stuff," Brown said....

  • Eagles try to snap skid against Griz, Bobcats at Reese

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 9, 2014

Throwing down shots last Saturday night at Holt Arena in Pocatello was maybe especially tough for the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team because most of the Eagles were throwing up. Nagged by a bad case of food poisoning that affected the majority of the team, and likely led to their abysmal start in an 83-72 Big Sky Conference loss to Idaho State, Eastern finished their opening weekend of league play 0-2 after a 74-67 defeat Thursday at Weber State. The E...

  • Eastern women get fired up at right time in Idaho State win

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 9, 2014

Sometimes lighting that fire under her players is, as Eastern Washington University head women's basketball coach Wendy Schuller suggests, like rubbing a pair of damp sticks together. But that certainly was not the case in last Saturday's Big Sky Conference game with visiting Idaho State. No spark or accelerant was necessary; just a few perfectly scripted words helped fuel the Eagles' 67-55 victory. "It was kind of like 'hey, what the heck's going on here?'" Schuller said. "As...

  • Cheney's legislative priorities

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 9, 2014

City of Cheney officials are hoping the old saying "The best offense is a good defense" proves correct when it comes to the upcoming Washington Legislature's short session. The Legislature's 60-day mid-biennium session begins Jan. 13, and while there will be a lot on legislator's plates to deal with, Cheney Mayor Tom Trulove doesn't expect much action. Particularly in the House of Representatives, whose members' two-year terms are up this coming fall. "With legislators...

  • Hobbs is 2013 Officer of the Year

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 9, 2014

For Cheney Police Det. Justin Hobbs, a career in law enforcement didn't manifest itself immediately after graduation from Deer Park High School. In fact, you might say he was "steered" in that direction. "I had friends in law enforcement when I was in high school and at Kaiser," Hobbs said. "I did some (patrol) ride alongs – and got hooked." Those firsthand experiences have culminated with Hobbs being named the Cheney Police Department's 2013 Officer of the Year. The award i...
