Stolen honeybun leads to arrest

Local man jail on multiple charges

SPOKANE VALLEY — A local man shoplifting a honeybun is being held in the Spokane County Jail on multiple cahrges.

Mayger D. Jones, 23, is being held on $2,500 bond on charges of possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and third-degree theft.

His arrest came at about 7:35 p.m. April 22 after deputies responded to a call of a man walking round the WinCo Foods grocery store, 9718 E. Sprague Ave., with a gun on his hip, records show. The caller, a store employee, reported the man, later identified as Jones, kept touching the handgun and adjusting his pants.

Jones was also eating a honeybun that had not yet been paid for, records show. He allegedly self-checked out with the empty honeybun wrapper in his hand, without scanning the wrapper or paying for the pastry, then left the store.

Responding deputies located Jones in a nearby parking lot, detained and searched him, records show. He was found in possession of a 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun in a pants pocket.

He was also found with the honeybun wrapper in his pocket.

A check of the gun’s serial numbers showed it had been reported stolen November 2023 during a garage and vehicle burglary, records show. Deputies also learned Jones cannot legally possess a concealed weapon.

After being arrested, Jones told deputies he purchased the gun from a friend four days prior, not knowing it was a stolen gun, records show. He also refused to identify the person who allegedly sold him the gun.

In addition to the charges, Jones was issued a trespass notice preventing him from returning to WinCo.
