School board receives project updates

Earth is moving in a lot of places around Cheney and Superintendent of schools Rob Roettger gave an update on construction around the public schools at the July 18 Cheney board meeting.

During the presentation, he showed pictures to the board of every school that is being worked on – all of them in Cheney.

Betz Elementary also has a new secure entry and has new classrooms being added right now. There were additional bathrooms also included, which was not originally in the plan.

“It has a lot more lighting in the entrance too,” Roettger said.

The project has about five more weeks left until it is done in this phase.

At Cheney High School, the west parking lot addition is underway. They originally broke ground at the site on June 27.

At Sunset Elementary, site work is being done everywhere along with Windsor Elementary.

“All the projects are underway now,” Roettger said.

Salnave Elementary School had work completed at their site with a new secure entry that forces visitors to go inside the front office before continuing into the school.

The project came in $43,775 under budget after having an approved fund of $140,000, which was later voted on in the meeting to move the funds to the high school project.

An additional $61,153 was also moved from the board program Owner’s Management Reserve (OMR) to have a total of $104,928 added to the high school plans. The improvements to Cheney High School have guaranteed maximum price negotiations and a construction subcontractor buyout that is projected to be completed by Aug. 10.

Roettger also talked to the board about the not being able to irrigate the school district’s sports field due to the water constriction with the city. He expressed that the fields are not looking the best and it is not because they are not trying to take care of it.

“We are struggling with the water issues,” Roettger said. “But we are trying our best.”
