Cheney High art students exhibit at annual regional show

Students of Cheney High School art teacher James Scarcello took part recently in an annual regional art show, exhibiting works with students from throughout Northeast Washington Educational Service District 101.

In a March 13 email, Scarcello said the "regional program is the first segment of a statewide art show and celebration sponsored by OSPI. Top finishers at the regional level then advance to a statewide competition in Olympia."

At the show, 15 CHS students were selected for awards including Superintendent's Award, Central Washington University Scholarship, Judge's Choice Award along with first, second and third places. Johnathen Jacobsen ("Sun"), Kendra Wells (Equilibrium") and Sydney Fernandez "Inter-dimensional") received first-place awards, advancing them on to state competition.

Submitted art included works in soft sculpture, light sculpture, realistic and abstract drawings and paintings, photographs and ceramics. Awards and winners from Cheney are:

Central Washington University Scholarships (Students keep artwork, CWU will contact to discuss scholarship) - "Maggie," Lelie Holland, ($1,000); Judge's Choice Awards

(Student keeps artwork) - Sail Across the Open Sky," Maddie Kallsen and Superintendent's Award (Artwork will be purchased and remain on display at NEWESD 101) - "Kindred Tones," Kyle Duncan.

Second-place awards went to Alex Hill ("A New Beginning"), Jameson Powell ("Sacred Light"" and Tris Hagedorn ("jasper"). Third-place awards went to Charlotte Bigelow ("Relief"), Christopher Dawson ("the Iris Of The Soul"), Evie Rowe ("Truffula Trees") Jasmine Burnett ("underneath"), Jeanne Marshall ("Dutch Angel Dragon Trio") and Walker Ross ("Chicken's Eye").
