CHS wrestling falls to East Valley

The Cheney High School Blackhawks concluded the Great Northern League regular season on Jan. 17 with a 51-22 loss at East Valley High School. Overall, Cheney finished 1-3 in the league.

“We wrestled really tough,” head coach Brad Rasmussen said. “It was nice to go through the lineup and see some good things everywhere.”

The first Blackhawk to earn a win against East Valley was Teagan Simon at 120 pounds, pinning his opponent in 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Dylan Straley continued that success at 126 pounds, defeating his competition 5-3.

Zack Nguyen had another win for Cheney, sealing a 4-0 victory at 138 pounds. Alan Coumbs (170) was the next CHS athlete to win with a major decision, 15-3, over East Valley.

Boedy Taylor closed out the victories for the Blackhawks, pinning his opponent in 4:56.

Cheney took the weekend off and did not compete in any varsity tournaments. But the junior varsity did compete and won their tournament by going 4-1 on the day at the Lewis and Clark Duals.

“What we saw from the competition at East Valley carried over to a good JV tournament,” Rasmussen said.

CHS closed out their season at home against Medical Lake for Senior Night on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

“Medical Lake is tough this year,” Rasmussen said. “They won our tournament earlier in this season and they have a good team. There is good stuff and a good rivalry with Medical Lake. I am excited about senior night and to restore the good history between the two teams.”

The team will also compete in the North Idaho Rumble Tournament on Friday, Jan. 26. The district tournament will begin on Feb. 2.
