Cheney gymnastics takes third place

The Cheney High School gymnastics team completed their second meet of the season and finished third overall with 155.325 points. The Blackhawks competed against Central Valley, who took first with 165.700 points, along with Lewis and Clark, Mt. Spokane and Rogers.

“The girls did great and do a great job supporting each other through the highs and lows of the meet,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “They did a great job of not letting challenges on previous events affect their performance on events that followed.”

Sophia VanWormer highlighted the event, earning first in the bars for the second week in a row with a score of 9.250. She also took third in the all-around finals at 33.750 and tied for ninth in the beam with 7.900.

“We had many individual PR’s on individual events,” Frucci said. “Sophia VanWormer was bar champion for the second week in a row. Our team score improved by 11.375 points. A big part of the score increase was due to many girls competing harder tumbling passes than they did the week before.”

Alexis Miller competed in four events during the meet and finished seventh in all-around finals (32.875), fifth in bars (7.625), sixth in beam (8.300) and seventh in floor (9.025).

Kyli Mayhew took 10th in the all-around finals with 30.500 points along with tied for ninth in the beam with 7.900 points.

With the results, Cheney now moves to 3-5 overall. The next meet will be on Jan. 10, hosted by Cheney but will take place at the Mead Gym Center at 12509 N. Market St. at 6 p.m.
