Public works director Don MacDonald said that the test boring results from the new No. 8 Well in Cheney revealed it merits further development as a groundwater well. The ideal location for the pump was between 290 to 455 feet below the ground surface level.

Chris "Billy Bon" Covington, a human resources/management major at Eastern Washington University, out ate four other competitors by pounding down four and a half pitas (which weighed about 16 ounces each) at Pita Pit.

The Cheney Bi-Mart had its grand opening at 2221 First Street.

Students and their families turned out for the annual Betz Elementary School carnival which featured dozens of games, a cake walk, face painting, silent auction and much more.

The touring group "Kids on the Block"-made up of graduate students from Gonzaga University-made a stop at Sunset Elementary School in Airway Heights.

Elva Allan, a Cheney resident who served as a planning intern for the city of Medical Lake, was selected from among 120 applicants from across the country to receive a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) fellowship in Washington D.C. As a CHCI fellow, Allan was working for the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Reinvention Programs.

Nov. 19, 1987

George Fisher, a respected member of the Cheney community for more than half a century, passed away. The local school superintendent, he also served two terms as mayor, spent several terms on the Cheney City Council, and was twice president of the Cheney Chamber of Commerce.

Students as young as kindergartners were learning more about a computer than many adults had a chance to learn because of technology provided by the Medical Lake School district to Blair Elementary School.

Fred Johns, who spent 23 years as the chief business officer for Eastern Washington University, agreed to serve EWU as an interim vice president for extended programs. He retired from Eastern in 1983.

Nov. 17, 1977

The Medical Lake utilities committee voted to add approximately $5,000 to their portion of the drilling work at the new well site near Espanola.

Cheney Care Center Association president Cliff Gresham reported that the non-profit organization received conditional approval from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on its request for a $537,200 loan for the construction of a new, 60-bed nursing home on North Sixth Street near the high school.

Nov. 16, 1967

Dr. Wilfred Gamon resigned as the health officer for the city of Cheney. The city planned to work with the Spokane County Health Department for the future.

Ray and Chuck Myers had a three-day grand opening at their Union 76 station at 301 First St.

Eastern Washington State College was 9-0 after a narrow 26-21 victory over Western Washington. The team had hopes for a NAIA football playoff game.
