Voluntary measures asking citizens to conserve water in Medical Lake was soon to become the law if City Council members approved it.

Skylar Bradley finished his pumpkin carving work as he and many other kids were part of the Cheney Farmer’s Market’s pumpkin carving contest. The contest, and other events, marked the market’s end of the season.

Pine Lodge inmate workers loaded surplus of vegetables from the facility to vehicles for delivery to the Medical Lake Food Bank.

A second pawnshop opened for business at First Street in Cheney. The owner of the new shop, Mac Bastine, hoped that the local citizens wouldn’t see that as a negative thing for the city.

Cheney Care Center’s fall pet show was a huge success.

The Medical Lake Cardinals defeated Lakeside 35-12 in their Homecoming Game.

Oct. 22, 1987

The first enrollment report of the year was a positive one for Eastern Washington University as the number of full-time students was up, thanks to a 20 percent increase in the number of first-quarter freshmen.

Cheney police responded to Centennial Mills to grab a would-be jumper from a walkway between two of the mill’s buildings.

The Washington State University basketball team, featuring Cheney High graduate Brian Quinnett and guided by first-year coach Kelvin Sampson invaded the CHS gym for “A Night with the Cougars.”

Oct. 20, 1977

Gerald Blakley tried to make history by being the first incumbent mayor to be re-elected by the write-in ballot.

Cheney High School football coach Bruce Grambo submitted his resignation as head coach of the Blackhawk grid program.

Members of the Cheney School District Board approved an order halting the practice of bus drivers taking their preschool age children along with them on routes.

50 Years Ago

Oct. 19, 1967

A lengthy discussion on fluoridation of Cheney’s water was held during the City Council meeting.

Francis Smith, 21, and retired from the U.S. Air Force, took the position of clerk for the City of Medical Lake.

Eastern Washington State College was 12th ranked by the NAIA and undefeated after six football games.
