Cheney defeats Rogers for first volleyball win

Unhealthy air caused by smoke from regional wildfires played havoc with the opening of local high school sports action last week — indoors as well as outdoors.

Rules governing Pullman School District activities led not only to the cancellation of its soccer match last Thursday with Cheney, but also that evening’s volleyball contest with the Blackhawks.

Third-year CHS volleyball head coach Heather Zorrozua’s squad did manage to hit the hardwood competitively — hosting Greater Spokane League 3A Rogers on Sept. 6. After dropping the opening game to the Pirates, 25-22, the Lady Blackhawks rebounded to win the final three, 25-11, 25-10 and 25-22 to collect their first win of the season.

“Rogers was great competition for us and a great way to kick off this season of regular matches,” Zorrozua said in an email.

Freshman Avery Stark led Cheney with 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior Peyton Stark had 27 assists, with sophomore Morgan Peace collecting four aces. Peyton Stark, Abby Witt and Shelby Draper each had a block.

“The girls played well,” Zorrozua said. “We showed moments of greatness and truly proved that we are learning and implementing things in game situations.”

Because of the Pullman cancellation, which has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, Cheney opened it’s Great Northern League season Tuesday on the road at Clarkston, 1-1. The Lady Blackhawks remain on the road with a non-league contest Wednesday night at GSL 3A North Central, and return to the friendly confines of the CHS gym to face GNL rival West Valley today, Sept. 14. Match times are 7 p.m.
