Our local newspaper has a lot to read

Letter to the Editor

Have you read the Cheney Free Press lately? You should. Why? What a better way to get an honest perspective of current events as well as an understanding of the heart beat of Cheney and our neighboring West Plains communities.

The Free Press has been part of my life since early childhood and generations before. We were truly blessed with how we were kept informed on current and past events. Remember in elementary school when we were asked to bring something to share with the class? Well, the Free Press was my source to share newsy items. That was over 70 years ago.

Pick up a copy of the Free Press dated Aug. 24, 2017. Look at the articles. You will see informative articles entitled “In Our Opinion” about removing memorials, “Write to the Point” regarding the great eclipse, “Cheney depot relocation application submitted, Airway Height’s “Center funding approved,” “Brown considers run,” “Cheney School Board adopts annual budget,” EWU and Microsoft partner to teach data analytics,” Medical Lake’s “It’s business as usual…”; Business section and what’s taking place within our communities and Neighbor News.

Then look at the Sports section. EWU sports teams, our local schools teams, players of the week and much more in recognizing our local kids and their accomplishments. This is good information and will make you feel good.

Do we get this kind of information from any other news sources?

Have you ever attended a council meeting, planning commission meeting or other community events among West Plains cities? You should. Guess who you would see? Reporters Paul Delaney and /or John McCallum. They are there to give you the news of our communities. You won’t see any other news media in attendance. If Paul Delaney and John McCallum applied their reporting skills on a national level, we would be getting factual and unbiased reporting.

Small local newspapers are declining and could soon be gone. What then? Social media and large corporate news media. Are you ready to accept that as your only news sources?

Let’s encourage subscriptions, advertising and support for the Free Press.
