Cheney golf teams wrap up season at 2A championships

The Cheney High boys’ and girls’ golf teams wrapped up the year May 24 at the 2A state tournament.

Tyler Koohns, in his second state appearance, and Thomas Baycroft, competing in his first state tournament, both shot a 93 in the first round but did not make the 84-stroke cut to advance to round two. Head coach Jeff Pike said that while his players did not make it to day two,” they played well.”

On the girls’ side, Kelsey Smith shot a 108 but also did not qualify for the second round. Head coach Gerald Morton said Smith played well in the first round, but there were “a couple of holes that didn’t go her way,” that kept her from advancing.

“She was hoping to have some shots like in her practice round where she dropped one from 100 (feet) out,” Smith said.

Nate Koohns was a state alternate but did not compete.

The boys’ team loses only four athletes to graduation: Joshua Frye, Ian Hill, Logan Klauss and Carter Rowe. Both the Koohns brothers and Baycroft are expected to return next year.

The girls’ team loses only Smith, who Morton said “brought a lot to CHS golf.” The team should have a core group next year. Morton said he already has two players who will be putting in work during the offseason. Katarain Ljubisic, who Morton said “turned into a golf junkie” will also be practicing before next year, as will returning co-captain Hannah Lemelin.
