Cheney High School girls tennis head coach Courtney Webb predicted the matches between her team and the other Great Northern League schools would be close.

Other than Cheney's 6-1 loss to Pullman on April 11, she's been right so far.

The Blackhawks went 1-1 in league play last week with a 4-3 win against East Valley, April 20 and a 4-3 loss to Clarkston, April 24.

In the East Valley match, No. 1 singles Alannah Lewis continued her momentum from the Post Falls tournament win to defeat Macy Paschall (6-2, 6-1). No. 3 Danica Gary won her match against Jenna Pefley (6-3) after one set. Pefley forfeited the rest of the match because of illness.

In doubles, No. 1 Taylor Gould and Nika Kauwe continued their winning streak with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Sarah Kroll and Diana Dikhamindiya while No. 2 Jasmine Daily and Divinity Lomazzi won a close three-set match against Maddie Henderson and Emilee Roberts (6-4, 2-6, 6-3).

Against Clarkston, Bridget Calvert returned to the No. 1 singles spot to defeat Halle Berg (6-2, 7-5, 7-6, 10-8 tiebreaker) in a close match that lasted three hours.

"That was a battle the whole way through," Webb said, referring to Calvert's performance. "I was happy with how she was able to focus on the match."

In doubles, No. 1 Gould and Caitlyn Strong won their match against Kathryn Beurdman and Kylie Kemp (6-2, 7-5), while No. 2 Daily and Kauwe swept their Clarkston opponents (6-0, 6-0).

"We had some three setters and just played point for point," Webb said. "I switched things up in the lineup and the girls stepped up and played well under pressure."

Cheney (1-2 GNL, 4-2 overall), who is fourth in the league standings, played second-place West Valley (2-1, 6-1), April 25. The Blackhawks begin the second round of GNL play today (April 27) at home against league leader Pullman (3-0, 6-0). They will compete in the Inland Empire Tournament, April 28-29.
