Blackhawks cruise to wins over Clarkston track and field

Cheney’s boys’ and girls’ track teams had little difficulty at their second Great Northern League meet March 29 against visiting Clarkston. The Blackhawk boys breezed to a 101-44 win over the Bantams while the girls moved their GNL record to 2-0 with a 100-49 win.

Cheney’s boys captured first in 13 of the 17 events, and occupied two of the top three slots in 16 events. The girls nabbed first in 11 events, and had two in the top three in all 18 events. Both teams earned top-three finishes in several competitions.

For the boys, Charles Johnson took first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes while Zach Joungeward set a new personal record of 56.55 seconds for first in the 400 and Drake Johnson established a season best of 2:04.20 for first in the 800. Johnson also set a season best of 10:35.86 for first in the 3,200 and Tucker Cunningham emerged on top of the field in the 1,600.

Danny Boyd set new PRs of 16.33 and 45.97 for first in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Cheney dominated the relays, with James Blom, Dante Young, Zach Utz and Max Pierson winning the 4x100 and Jonathan Bishun, William Prater, Johnson and Kevin Houndonougbo the 4x400.

Chase Reed, Brock Winegar and Will Rushing all earned first-place finishes in the field. Reed was first in the discus, Winegar in the javelin and Rushing the pole vault.

For the girls, Alexis Van Horne set a new PR of 13.08 for first in the 100 while Alsatta Bakana was first in the 200. Brette Draper set a season best of 2:45.36 for first in the 800, Lelie Holland did the same for first in the 1,600 in 6:08.36 while Jolene Whiteley established a new PR of 13:24.94 for first in the 3,200.

Stephanie Assonken and Kaitren Fisher split the hurdles, with Assonken winning the 100 with a PR of 17.89 and Fisher the 300. Cheney’s 4x100 team of Ashley Rivera, Mackenzie Huotari, McKenna Hodgson and Atrena Gregory finished first.

In the field, Taishae Wallace won the discus with a new PR throw of 107 feet, 2 inches while Zoe Lamb was first in the pole vault and Assonken set a PR of 15-06.50 for first in the long jump.

Friday, Cheney sent mostly relay teams to the Cory NeVille Invitational at Riverside High School. The boys finished ninth out of 11 teams overall with 31.5 points while the girls were eighth out of 12 with 46 points.

The Blackhawks took four of the five relay events, with the exception being the girls’ 4x400, where they finished second to Northeast A League Freeman. In the girls’ 4x100, Assonken, Van Horne, Maddie Warren and Alexis Miller took first in 52.46 while the team of Gabrielle Nguyen, Miller, Warren and Van Horne took first in the 4x200 in 1:52.26.

In the 4x400, Bakana, Nguyen, Jocelyn Cone and Whiteley were second in 4:15.10. In the boys’ relays, Joungeward, Carson Brown, Chris Diaz and Charles Johnson were first in 44.40, with Brown, Peyton Putney, Houndonougbo and Johnson first in the 4x400 in 3:32.32.

In individual events, Bakana was second in the 200 meters with a PR of 25.42 while Isaiah Dunn set a PR of 44 seconds for third in the 300 hurdles. Lamb set a new PR of 10-06 for first in the girls’ pole vault, and Rushing was third in the boys’ pole vault.
