Miller takes fifth at gymnastics districts

Three athletes from the Cheney High gymnastics team earned high marks at the 3A/2A gymnastics district competition, Jan. 28 and will advance to the Feb. 11 3A/2A regionals at Ballard High School in Seattle.

Alexis Miller took fifth in all around scoring with 34.55 points, qualifying for all of the individual events at regionals. At districts, Miller scored high in the vault (8.125), balance beam (8.9), floor exercise (8.975) and bars (8.550)

Miller’s sister, Makayla Miller, qualified for regionals in the vault (8.075), bars (8.350), beam (7.2) and floor exercise (8.4).

Kyli Mayhew earned her first trip to regionals after her performances in the vault (7.8), bars (7.1), beam (7.4) and floor exercise (7.950).

Cheney finished fifth out of seven teams with 131.45 points. Kamiakin, from Kennewick, won the meet with a 171.7 team score.

In an email, head coach Jaelyn Gardner said her athletes are going to focus mainly on their individual routines leading up to regionals.

“We really don’t know who we will be up against Gardner said. “If the girls perform their routines like I know they can, they have the potential to move on to state.”
