Woman, son of Fairchild officer killed in Brooks Road crash

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash involving a train and a vehicle on Saturday morning, Jan. 7. The incident, which took place outside of Medical Lake city limits, claimed the lives of two people.

According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, a pickup truck, traveling southbound on Brooks Road, was hit by the train traveling west. In separate news releases, the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office and Fairchild Air Force Base confirmed the names of the victims, Melissa Normandin, 45, and Jacob Normandin, 14, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The release added that the victims were the wife and son of Capt. Daniel Normandin, 92nd Medical Operations Squadron.

“We’re deeply saddened by the loss of these two members of our Fairchild family,” Col. Ryan Samuelson, 92nd Air Refueling Wing Commander, said in the release. “The loss of any member of our Air Force family affects us all.”

Brooks Road was closed to north and southbound traffic at McFarlane and Thorpe roads for most of Saturday. The Sheriff’s Office and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway officials are investigating the crash.
