Eagle women open at home

Eastern Washington’s womens’ basketball team will tip off Big Sky Conference play at home, Saturday, Dec. 31 versus the University of Idaho, hoping not only to start off league play with a win, but to end a three-game losing streak.

The Eagles and Vandals tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m. at Reese Court.

Eastern comes off a road trip to New Orleans, La. where they took part in the Tulane Classic, Dec. 21-22 where they lost the opener to the host Green Wave, 63-51 before falling in the consolation game to Drake University 93-78.

Despite a 5-6 nonconference record, “We are ready to tackle Big Sky play,” head coach Wendy Schuller said. “I think our tough non-conference schedule has definitely prepared us for the rigors of what we’ll see in our conference.”

Redshirts senior Tisha Phillips flirted with a double-double against Drake, as the point guard picked up a team-best 20 points and handed out nine assists. Delaney Hodgins tallied 19 points to extend her double-digit scoring streak to 28 games, while freshman Symone Starks came off the bench and poured in a career-best 16 points.

Against Tulane, Eastern had to shake off some rust after an unexpected 10-day layoff due to the cancellation of a Dec. 18 game at Air Force. The Eagles benefited from the trio of senior Ashli Payne, Hodgins and sophomore Violet Kapri Morrow, as each player scored 13 points.
