Summerhawks 17U team is swept by Asotin County

The Cheney 17U Summerhawks baseball team went 0-2 in a doubleheader against the Asotin County Blues, June 5.

The first game was an 11-1 loss in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule followed by a 9-1 defeat.

In game one, the Blues’ defense only allowed the Summerhawks one hit. Cheney scored their run after Matthew Riggs hit an RBI double to score Andrew Witt.

“We knew they would be tough,” head coach Austin Sharp said. “Asotin has been in the AA state playoffs a couple of times.”

In game two, Jacob Lauber hit a single to score Devin Cook for the Summerhawks’ only run. Andrew Witt was 2-for-3 at the plate.

“Overall, I think it was a productive day,” Sharp said. “We learned a lot of things we can put into our workouts and build upon.”

Riggs (0-1) took the loss on the mound in the first game. Sharp said Riggs had a rough first inning, but “stuck with it” for the remainder of the game.

Dylan Arthur (0-1) took the loss in game two after he shared pitching duties with Johnny Owings, Devin Cook and Julian Chabot.

“Arthur did well, he and Riggs will probably be two of our starters,” Sharp said. “They’ll have some growing pains to work on.”

The Summerhawks (0-2) return to action June 16 when they host the Blues in a doubleheader.

“We have five practices before we play them again,” Sharp said. “If we put in the work, I think we’ll be ready for them.”
