Lady Blackhawks open season with road split

The Cheney High School softball team opened their 2016 season last week by going 1-1 in a pair of road games. The Lady Blackhawks lost 11-6 in the season-opener Tuesday to Medical Lake, but rebounded well Thursday with a 20-3 route of Prosser.

Cheney took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the first against the Cardinals, but could manage just three more over the next three innings. Led by the hitting of Rachel Stanfill, Medical Lake took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth and also in the sixth for the win.

Alyson Dassow led Cheney with a pair of hits, a single and a double, while Kara Johnstone (double), Meghan Krantz (triple), Courtney Johnstone and Catrina Sneddon each added a hit. Freshman Cheyanne Gleave took the loss on the mound, and the Lady Blackhawks defense committed three errors.

Thursday Cheney exploded at the plate against the Mustangs, collecting 15 hits and blowing things open with six runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth to stake a 20-0 lead en route to the win. Krantz was 3 for 3, including a pair of triples, while Kara Johnstone was 3 for 5 at the plate. Gleave, Macie Despino and Courtney Hanson each added two hits.

Gleave got the win to even her record at 1-1, striking out eight batters while giving up three runs on three hits. Cheney committed just two errors, but was helped out by nine miscues by Prosser.
