Medical Lake girl's basketball continues to struggle on court

The offensive spark continued to flicker last week for the Medical Lake girl’s basketball team.

The Cardinals lost a pair of Northeast A League games 56-44 at Newport and 48-21 at home to Lakeside on Senior Night.

League-leading Lakeside (12-1 NEA, 16-3 overall) held Medical Lake to single digit scoring Friday in each of the quarters and no Cardinal player managed to score in double figures.

“Lakeside is a very good team, with two very good guards with very high basketball IQs,” head coach Kyle Lundberg said. The Eagles raced to a 16-4 early lead and the Cardinals could never play enough catch up, trailing 25-14 at halftime.

Bradyn Wegner and Jaxyn Farmen topped Medical Lake scoring with four points apiece on a tough scoring and shooting night.

“Lakeside plays very good defense, we just weren’t able to knock down our shots,” Lundberg said. “We got some good open looks, but just didn’t shoot very well.”

Tuesday Medical Lake hit the road to Newport (8-5, 9-10), a team they defeated 33-30 on Jan. 8. Only this time the Grizzlies had more scoring punch.

Led by Hadley Stratton’s 21 points and 14 rebounds, Newport jumped off to a quick start, leading 19-7 after the first quarter and 30-22 at the half. Wegner paced Medical Lake with 17 points while Makayla Geiger added 10.

The Cardinals are wrapped in a tight race for playoff positioning, tied with Colville (4-9, 6-13) that will likely be resolved with their final NEA contest that was played at Riverside (6-7, 7-10) Feb. 9.
