EWU provost search down to three finalists

Eastern Washington University is one step closer to finding its new provost and vice president of academic affairs.

In a news release, EWU announced the committee leading the search has announced the names of three finalists:

● Karen B. Schmaling, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Washington State University Vancouver.

● Brian L. Levin-Stankevich, PhD, President and Professor, Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah.

● Scott A. Gordon, PhD, Dean, Pott College of Science, Engineering and Education, University of Southern Indiana.

Levin-Stankevich served as interim president of EWU from 2005-06 as well as vice provost, vice president and then provost from 1995-2006.

Eastern received more than 100 applications for this chief academic officer position. In the news release, search committee co-chairs Mindy Breen and Mary Voves called the three finalists “exceptional.”

Eastern has been without a provost since Dr. Rex Fuller, who had served in the position since 2011, resigned to become the new president of Western Oregon University.

Mary Ann Keogh Hoss was named interim provost and vice president for academic affairs until the university hires Fuller’s replacement.

According to Eastern’s website, the provost and vice president for academic affairs provides visionary leadership for high quality academic programs, scholarship, research and creative activity. She or he promotes a rich academic life that fosters student success and advances the intellectual vitality, diversity and effectiveness of the institution. The provost also reports to president and guides a collaborative and collegial team, creating positive relationships across university areas to accomplish the university’s mission.

EWU is encouraging the campus community to actively participate in the interview process and provide feedback.
