Knight and Wavada receive service awards

At the annual Eastern Washington University Thanksgiving Luncheon, Nov. 19, two employees were honored with the most prestigious recognition for staff, the Distinguished Service Awards.

Christi Wavada, Women and Gender Studies program coordinator, received the Classified Staff Distinguished Service Award. Rose Knight, manager of budget and administration for EWU Libraries, was honored with the Administrative Exempt Distinguished Service Award.

The Distinguished Service Awards are given each year to recognize exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the university. The University Medals and Awards Committee review letters of nomination and support. The award includes the Distinguished Service Award medallion and a check for $1,000.

Cache for Cash set to kickoff

The Cheney Merchants Association (CMA) is hosting Cache for Cash, a real-life treasure hunt, on Dec. 3 and 4. Based on the popular scavenger hunt game of geocaching, this interactive event is open to all Cheney residents, students, and visitors. Participants will complete their Cache for Cash “treasure map” by collecting stamps at CMA merchant businesses in Cheney, and then turn in their map to enter a drawing for one of three $100 prizes. 

Twenty one merchants are participating, including Cheney Federal Credit Union, Cheney Sears Hometown Store, Banner Bank, Eagles Pub, Auto Services Plus, The Easterner, Copy Junction, Zip’s Drive-In, Davis Communication, EWU Bookstore, Cheney Feed and Tack, Vision Haus Optometry, Mint Condition Dental, Marketplace Cheney, American Family Insurance, Top of the Line Seafood and Burgers, Snap Fitness, Owl Pharmacy, Nixon Farmers Agency, Holiday Inn Express and the Cheney Free Press. 

Many of the merchants will give out coupons, have special offers, drawings for prizes, and/or give-away items for the treasure hunters.

The rules are simple, pick up your “treasure map” entry form at Copy Junction (1921 First St. in Cheney) starting on Monday, Dec. 1. Maps can be downloaded from http://www.cheneymerchants.org or the Facebook Page.

On Dec. 3 and 4 visit each of the businesses on the map to collect stamps. Aim to collect all 21 but 18 out of the 21 are required to qualify for the cash prize drawing. Turn in your map with completed entry form to the Cheney Free Press office (1616 W. First St.) by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 to be entered into the drawing for three $100 cash prizes.
