It's time for Tyler Grange's annual Harvest Dinner

Of Cabbages and Kings

Every year the Tyler Grange folks prepare an excellent dinner for friends, neighbors, relatives and hopeful people hungrily standing nearby. This year, on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m., the exciting time begins with the dinner, followed by a baked goods auction happily waiting for you to bid on a homemade treat. Does it make you hungry thinking about it?

The Tyler Grange provides the dinner basics: A perfectly cooked turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans. We, as the guests, can decide on whatever we would like to bring: salads, fruits, casseroles, pies; you name it. We’ll help you eat it.

Local merchants generously donate door prizes. Children can look forward to prizes just for them, while mom and dad may find that they have won an item they can take home with pride. Someone has said, “This is a great event for families.”

The auction begins and the excitement grows. Lots of laughter breaks out while the goodhearted rivalry brings the bidders together. Everyone wonders who will bid the highest and win the prize.

I remember from another year when the bidding kept rising higher and higher. I thought, “The winner can be proud, knowing they have helped a worthy cause.” And it was true. The proceeds from the auction are utilized by the grange to cover expenses and to maintain the homey, historic grange hall where the festivities will take place.

Remember the date, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. I repeat what Lyle Polack has said, “Grab the kids and join your friends and neighbors for a fun-filled evening.” And we say, “All are welcome. We’ll be watching for you!”
