With the addition of lights and a scoreboard, football was about to return to the Cheney High School campus for the first time since 1992. The Blackhawks had been playing home games at Woodward Field at Eastern Washington University.

Despite recent improvements that had helped reduce accidents, State Route 904 was still in need of widening to four lanes, local officials said. The road was the busiest two-lane highway in Eastern Washington with upwards of 17,000 vehicles traveling between Cheney and Four Lakes.
