Deadlines for submitting West Plains Briefs is noon Monday. Briefs should be under 100 words if possible. Briefs may be edited for length.

ML Memorial Day service

The Medical Lake Cemetery Association invites the community to a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25 at 9:30 a.m.. The cemetery is located at 21419 West Thorpe Road, off of Brooks Road. Contact Janice Radmer at 299-5269 for more information.

Veterans Cemetery ceremony

The community is cordially invited to attend the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs Memorial Day Ceremony at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery on Monday, May 25.

A musical prelude will begin at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Parking is available at the cemetery with overflow available along Ritchey Road. Seating is limited so please arrive early.

Guests are welcome to bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Those in need of ADA arrangements should call (509) 299-6280.

Cheney Memorial Day service

The Cheney Cemetery Association is sponsoring the annual Memorial Day Program at Fairview Cemetery. The program begins at 11:15 a.m. Monday, May 25.

Due to lack of a facility, the annual pancake breakfast and march to the cemetery will not be held this year. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet at the cemetery along with the Cheney Cub Scouts, VFW rifle squad, Eastern Washington University ROTC, Cheney High School Music Department and other community members for this patriotic program honoring those who gave their lives for freedom.

Donations are appreciated at the program, and are used for improvements at Cheney’s cemeteries.

Cheney book club meeting

“I Am Malala,” the inspiring story of a Pakistani girl who won the Nobel Peace Prize is the May selection of the Book Discussion Group of the Friends of the Cheney Community Library. The group meets Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m. at the library. All are welcome to attend.

Malala Youssafzai’s autobiography tells of her upbringing by an illiterate mother and a father who established a school to educate girls. When the Taliban took over the Swat Valley they forbade education of girls, but Malala continued attending school until she was shot pointblank in her school bus. She moved to England with her family, and after a long recovery, continues to speak for girls’ education.
