Nadeau qualifies for state in 100 butterfly at Pullman

The Cheney High boy’s swimming team started 2015 with a close 87-75 loss to Pullman Jan. 3.

Junior Scott Nadeau qualified for his fourth state event after he took first in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.87 seconds. He also finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.79).

Nadeau wasn’t the only Blackhawk to take the top spot in their events. Sophomore Trevor Babcock took first in the 100 freestyle (52.33) and 200 freestyle (1:55.57). Senior Caleb Prophet finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.07).

Sophomore Jacob Devine finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:23.43). Junior Spencer Hagel posted a season best time after he took third in the 200 individual medley (2:50.01). Junior Arseniy Tepp finished third in the 500 freestyle (6:40.38).

Head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said she was happy with how the team performed.

“With the EWU (Eastern Washington University) pool being closed during winter break, we didn’t get as much practice time as I would have liked, but we came out of the break pretty well.”

In team events Babcock, Nadeau, Prophet and Tepp took second in both the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.43) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.54). The team of Devine, Hagel, senior Justin Barker and sophomore Matt Christensen took second in the 200 medley relay (2:14.41).

Cheney travels to Yakima Jan. 13 to face Selah in their second dual of the season.

Selah defeated Cheney, 93-76 back on Dec. 16. On that day, Selah raced Pullman head-to-head during the same time as Cheney’s meet against Grandview and Prosser. Officials calculated the Dec. 16 Cheney versus Selah score based on times from those meets.

“I’m exciting to swim head-to-head against Selah,” Hochwalt said. “There’s a bug that’s been going around, so I hope to have my full line up. We’ll see what happens.”
