Cleone's Closet celebrates grand re-opening

Cleone's Closet Thrift Store had its re-opening, Oct. 6, at its new location at 1515 S. Lyons Street, next to ABC Mini Storage. The store temporarily closed its doors back in August to move the merchandise to the new location.

Cleone's Closet is part of the Women's Healing and Empowerment Network, a non-profit organization providing counseling, healing centers and other services for individuals and families affected by abuse. The store sells used clothing, electronics and other household items.

Mabel Dunbar, president and CEO for the Women's Healing and Empowerment Network, explained the decision to relocate from the store's previous location, at 13514 W. Sunset Highway, came from a combination of wanting to save money on rent and needing a bigger space for the store.

The front of the store has all of the merchandise.

On the right side of the building is the store's food distribution center where families can receive bread, milk and other food to help them through the week. The center runs from noon - 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

According to Mike Josey, Cleone's Closet business manager, the store receives food from Second Harvest Food Bank twice a week and Yokes' Fresh Market three times a week.

In addition to the food distribution, people receive counseling from Dunbar.

"We have a break room that also functions as a private room where people can get help," Josey said. "Whatever goes on between them and Mabel is private."

Dunbar and Josey hope to have dinners, seminars and other activities at the new store.

"All of this acreage and space is an improvement from the older store," Dunbar said. "Hopefully we can do community events out here."
