Spokane County investigators apprehend daytime burglars

Members of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office investigative task force arrested Damian A. Zowal, 20, and Trever J. Burzic, 21, Sept. 5 for the burglaries of two residences in Spokane County.

According to a news release , an increase in burglaries in North Spokane County took place in August. While reviewing the burglary reports, officers recognized a specific pattern where the burglaries happened during the day and items such as firearms, prescription medications, jewelry and money were taken.

Detective Aaron Myhre was assigned the cases with the goal of identifying and arresting the burglars. After reviewing incident reports, where valuable information had been provided by the victims and concerned citizens, Myhre determined the suspects were Zowal and Burzic. He also identified the suspect’s vehicle(s) and places of residence.

Officers set up observation of Zowal and Burzic on Sept 5. During this observation period, it was determined that Zowal and Burzic committed two burglaries.

The suspects were taken into custody in the 11100 block of North Market Road while in their vehicle. During the arrest, Zowal was found to be in possession of a stolen firearm. Both suspects were interviewed and agreed to cooperate.

The two suspects believed they had conducted between 10 and 20 burglaries in the north county area. Investigators believe this number to be higher. With the cooperation of Zowal and Burzic, numerous items of stolen property were recovered.

There are numerous firearms still unaccounted for and investigators are working to locate and recover. Both Zowal and Burzic admitted to an addiction to OxyContin.

On Sept. 8, Myhre and detective Dean Meyer conducted a search warrant of the suspect vehicle and recovered more stolen property.

Zowal was booked into Spokane County jail on two counts of first-degree burglary and theft of a firearm. Burzic was booked into Spokane County jail on two counts of residential burglary.

Investigators believe additional felony charges may be filed at the conclusion of the investigation.
