Smedley takes eighth at state

Cheney High School tennis player Katelynn Smedley finished her junior season on a high note after she placed eighth at the 2014 2A Girls State Tennis Singles Championships, May 30-31, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

In the first round of competition, Smedley faced 2013 state champion Chloe Goyette, of West Valley-Yakima. Goyette defeated Smedley, 6-0, 6-1, and went on to win the state title.

After winning back-to-back matches against Tumwater’s Lauren Brandt and Olympics’ Annie Marie Herbert, Smedley lost to Sehome’s Ali Morrow, 6-4, 6-1, in the match to determine fifth place.

Smedley came off a strong regular season. Her only loss came at the hands Pullman’s Tori Berditchevskaya, back in May. Prior to the state championships, Smedley placed second at districts, losing to Berditchevskaya in the finals.

The Cheney High girls’ tennis team placed fourth at districts.
