Babcock, Nadeau clinch first at districts

The Cheney boys’ swimming team brought home hardware to the trophy case after they competed in 2A-1A District Championships, Feb. 7-8, in Ellensburg.

In team scores, Cheney took third place with 237, behind West Valley and Pullman who came in first and second with 430 and 330, respectively.

In individual events, Scott Nadeau came in first in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.84. He also placed second in the 100 butterfly in 56.98. He will advance to the state championships, Feb. 21-22 at the King County Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Trevor Babcock clinched first in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.53. He will advance to state in the event. Babcock also came in fourth in the 100 free in 51.50 seconds. Head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said he might get a wild card spot at the state meet for the 100 free.

The team of Steele, Nadeau, Babcock and Xavier Meyer came in third in the 400 free relay in 3:32.32 and will advance to the state championships.

Hochwalt said it was nice to see the team dig deeper at the district level.

“We had several kids coming in the top 16,” Hochwalt said. “Now our goal is getting to state and see how we do there.”
