Sheriff warns residents of holiday mail theft

Suspects check Christmas cards for money

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office officials have said that over the past couple weeks numerous residents of south Spokane County have had their mail stolen out of their mailboxes. The majority of these incidents involve the suspect(s) opening mail near the victim’s residence and discarding items with no value.

According to a news release, Christmas cards seem to be the primary target where the suspect(s) are checking to see if there has been any cash sent to the victim. Another common target are packages delivered to homes that are left on the front porch when nobody is there to accept the item.

The Sheriff’s Office urges citizens to make every attempt to have someone at their residence to accept delivered packages or set up alternate methods of receiving the packages other than on their front porch. For outgoing mail, be cautious of placing bills in the mailbox and raising the flag for delivery personnel.

And finally, if residents see suspicious vehicles or people in their neighborhood please make a Crime Check report with any vehicle and or suspect description that can safely be provided.
