Bo Levi Mitchell is CFL's Offensive Player of the Week

Former Eagle, Payton Award winner earns honor in first Canadian League start

A pair of former Eastern Washington University football players – quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and linebacker Shea Emry – have been selected as recipients of Gibson’s Finest Players of the Week for Week 5 of the 2013 Canadian Football League season.

Mitchell, who won the 2011 Walter Payton Award and led the Eagles to the 2010 NCAA Division I Championship, was named the Offensive Player of the Week in his first career CFL start. He completed 88 percent of his passes (29-of-33) for 376 yards and three touchdowns in Calgary’s 37-24 win over Winnipeg on July 27. Mitchell had no interceptions and also ran for 12 yards on six attempts.

Calgary is currently 4-1 on the season, and Mitchell has directed the Stampeders to their last two victories. On July 20, he helped Calgary rally from a 24-point deficit for a 38-27 victory over Montreal. He passed for 49 yards and two touchdowns in that game, and also had a 26-yard run in a relief role.

Emry, a Montreal Alouettes linebacker who played for the Eagles from 2005-06, was named the Canadian Player of the Week. He had two interceptions, including a 21-yard interception return off a Mike Reilly pass in the first quarter of Montreal’s 32-27 victory over Edmonton on July 25. Emry, who is a native of Richmond, British Columbia, and transferred to The University of British Columbia after playing at EWU, is tied for first in the league with two interceptions this season.
