MLSD updates basic policies at March board meeting

The Medical Lake School District board of directors passed a few updates to district policy at its last meeting, March 26 at Medical Lake Middle School.

Among the changes included the new meeting start time of 6 p.m. The school board began meeting at the new time in February. Updating the document merely made the change official.

Another policy passed clarified that the district superintendent was an executive officer of the board and is “responsible for the administration of the schools under applicable laws and policies of the district.”

Following with simple changes at the meeting, a title change of the unprofessional conduct policy changed to “certification revocation,” and reinforced the notion that staff members aren’t to take part in unprofessional conduct.

Superintendent Pam Veltri said the changes were once again suggested from the state level and passed on down to the district for their approval.

“In this they changed unprofessional conduct to taking away a certificate, certification revocation. It just says that no staff member shall illegally furnish alcohol or a controlled substance, including marijuana, to students,” Veltri said.

In another updated policy, parents will now be advised of changes regarding student rights and records via the annual student rights and responsibilities handbook. But, that isn’t anything new to the district.

“We’ve always called it that anyway, so in practice it’s not a change for us. But it delineated what it would be,” Veltri said.

The final action item of the evening saw the school district renewed its annual drug free workplace notice of compliance.

The next Medical Lake School District board of directors meeting takes place Tuesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. This next meeting, part of the board’s tour around the district, will be held at the Medical Lake High School library.
